You could in Mercs but only in a custom game type. It wasn't in the normal campaign.
-One mission in Mechwarrior 3 where you had ~5 of them try to swarm you, which should normally involve nothing else threatening you.
-Various appearances in MechAssault 1/2
In turn if we're talking about the player using an Elemental style suit as a _normal_ thing that's going to tend to narrow it down to MechAssault 2.
Mechwarrior 2 proper had them as a secret unlockable, and 3 did allow you to play as one in Instant Action. So while it wouldn't _technically_ be accurate to say that there is no precedence for it...
-The idea proposed is in complete contradiction to Lore, unless they pulled a CoD:MW and had the story following a Mech Star _AND_ an Elemental Point.
-There are many, many reasons demanding Elemental Point missions is not reasonable as in this context it would effectively amount to developing an entirely separate, borderline unrelated game.
-It in turn doesn't really make sense for this campaign during the Initial Clan Invasion to have a Clan Star fighting Elementals... So they we would only make sense as background elements, which they are here while being handled in a reasonable fashion.
-While you could potentially go the Nova rather than Star route... That would require extensive efforts, and it is entirely reasonable they didn't given no other Mechwarrrior/MechAssault game did it before.
-Prior precedence outside of MechAssault 2 effectively humored the idea as a borderline Easter Egg and the obvious issues MW2/3 had with said optional Easter Egg were tolerated under that basis.
Associated with that do note if you play or pull footage from those games outside of MechAssault 2 what you usually end up with is watching the Mech utterly fail to target the Elemental at all and the Elemental then taking out the Mech out over time with repeated laser strikes...
