I was confused as well the first time too and I can confirm that it's unlocked once you get pretty far into the game.
Hopper is a lot more comfortable for ruin combat though.
Them both having a jump is redundant, but the hopper was great for running around ruins and the ships.
The jump bot just felt like the best combat mech in the game.
There is the obvious one with the weapons being on a 360 wheel that's completely independent from the legs so you can always stay on target easily while moving in any direction.
I used the automatic grenade launcher it can have for the whole game, lower range than tank canons, but rate of fire more than makes up for that, plus when you're dodging everything because you can literally run circles while staying on target, lacking range isn't a problem.
I don't remember the name, but the secondary weapon I was using on the jump bot also was a machine gun that did high damage to bots as well.
And the huge one, you can give it the "repellent shield" special mod, it absorbs all damage and makes you invincible while its active and once you take enough damage to destroy the shield it explodes in a massive damage attack to anything nearby
This means it either wiped out groups of smaller enemies, or something i liked doing was activating it during fights with boss enemies and intentionally taking hits to use the explosion for burst damage between phases.
Hopper is small and nimble though, better for exploration.
