When you say you want to play more games like Demon Roots I'm assuming you me Story Rich, Well Written, Plot Relevant experiences that aren't censored(inherently).
Because again I wouldn't belittle this game to just be a simple "H" game.
Demon(s) Roots was my GOTY for 2023 & that's saying ALOT, imo.
Thanks for the criterias, I will add them to my original post.
I suppose we have differing views on what a "hentai game" is. While Demons Roots obviously, as you know, goes under any definition you may find of the term, I do personally have a ton of respect for hentai games. Let me elaborate.
As you know, there are a bunch of trash H-games on steam, and you'll have to sift through a bunch of them before you'll find any one worth your time. An alternative to steam is DLsite. While it also has a lot of mindless porn, there are many more gems hidden there than on steam. Examples are many of the titles mentioned earlier in the thread.
I don't think the average match-3 hentai game on steam defines what h-games are.
And I absolutely do think you can compare Demons Roots to quality H-games! Where the H-content compliments an otherwise excellent game.
This kind of story writing, characters & setting is very rare, it's surprisingly good even as someone that dislikes RPGmaker type games as low quality, this one is def. an exception.
I wouldn't say the h-content is low on the priority list. Sure if you skip doremi and bad endings you don't get too many scenes, but they're certainly there! The author of the game is a legendary doujin artist after all! And it's common for a majority of the h-scenes to be optional, especially in RPGmaker games.
Completely agree that the writing, design and the setting in the game is is something that absolutely stands out! It's great.
Into The Nightmare: Isn't as high-quality as Demon's Roots, but it still has charismatic characters, high quality and stylistically distinct art, and an abundance of fun energy. And has one of the more ambitious Gameplay systems I've ever seen in an RPG-Maker game, going full Final Fantasy Job System, with each character having a selection of ability stones they can equip that alter their skill lists to fill various combat roles.
Abaddon: Princess of the Decay - Full on Resident Evil style 8-bit horror/puzzle with intense atmosphere, strong characterization, and a lot of player-decided story beats. This one is so focused on character and story that I played for hours and barely saw anything that could be considered porn, out of the game's pretty vast catalog of it (if the Gallery is anything to go by). Very unique, very intense, well worth playing.
Kozue's Strange Journey: Again not as high quality as Demon's Roots, but still has a lot going for it. The Persona-style time-management system works surprisingly well to compliment the usual HRPG trappings of looking around the world for things to click on, you always feel like things are advancing rather than coming to a standstill while you look for porn. The characters are also unusually good for this kind of game, not entirely original, but they don't devolve into braindead horny idiots either.
Heart of Darkness: I haven't played as much of this one as the others, but it definitely has a unique atmosphere and system going for it. Imagine "Dark Souls" if it was an RPGMaker hentai game, with a bit of extra creepiness sprinkled on top. It seems pretty good so far.
just spent the last couple of weeks playing these games and wow they're all REALLY GOOD! thanks for the recommendations and if there's anymore, keep them coming
Glad they're appreciated, and glad to share. I've certainly found some more since then.
Sheryl: The Alchemist of the Island Ruins - The only one of these games I've seen to successfully implement the action-RPG Zelda-style combat gameplay. It also has adorable art and fun characters, but actually knows how to slow down and have a dramatic story beat or two as well. Seems to be a slightly older engine, and it can be kinda janky on the technical performance side of things, but it's still pretty lovable.
Brave Alchemist Colette - A fun and diverse set of characters, good art, and a meaty gameplay loop that lets you put as much or as little time into it as you want.
Letina's Odyssey - The first game from the makers of "Kozue's Strange Journey". It's by far the simplest game they've made, but somehow it still comes off incredibly endearing with fun characters and writing that you can really feel for, and gameplay reminiscent of the original Dragon Quest.
Lost Chapter - "Slay the Spire" gameplay combined with an incredibly striking black and white art style, and writing that... could be good if it wasn't machine-translated. Despite some of the writing mistakes though, the game is incredibly addictive and fun, with so much to enjoy.
