Well, FromSoft, You Tried.
Maybe AC7 will be a real AC game and not Mech Souls, eh?

I will laugh so hard if From decides they don't like how polarizing this title is and 'adjusts' it away from the things that are pissing everyone off, lol
Huge AC Fan here all the way back to Last Raven but especially 4/4A

1. I love the boss fights. Yikes, hopefully AC7 gets even more of these.

2. Break bar is cool, pulse shield I actually agree with it feels pretty bad to fight.

3. I LOVE the boost system, it's not perfection like 4A but I'm not gonna complain about something this good still.

4. Not even sure what you mean, do you mean that you can't lock your camera to your mech's direction? I could agree with this, to me it's a neutral, but I don't see why we couldn't have it.

5. Build diversity feels substantially less than previous titles, this is true I'd say, not much to argue here.

6. I agree the game spikes difficulty at random, but you DEFINITELY have the tools to handle any situation thrown at you by the time you get there. In fact I just made a lengthy post about how I wish the game was way harder, it's too easy, even the hard bosses quote unquote. And with a polished build, even the big health bosses go down in two minutes or less. Hardly anything to think about.

7. About the UI, that's definitely a personal preference I'd say, a lot of people like important information right next to the target. I for one don't mind either way but nothing wrong with personal preference on UI.

All in all, AC6 is a great game. For whatever reason old AC heads (I am one of them) seem to keep saying it's a souls-like but if you listen to any souls player they'll tell you it's not souls-like. I for one think it's HEAVILY AC inspired still, it's just Fromsoft has changed their design philosophy in certain things.

There's a reason no one knew what old AC was. It wasn't because the games were so widespread and popular that there was a blackout. They were objectively bad games that only a niche community (me included) loved. Personally, I think there were many right directions in AC6 and I hope if AC7 does come out, they continue to follow suit. I just hope maybe the gamespeed is a bit faster next time. Give me that old 4A feel.
Just rewatched AC5D final boss.. He is easier than Balteus XD
No, seriously, people who blindly defends the game got their eyes burnt out by Rubicon fire.

The old games weren't bad at all, least of all "objectively." They were niche because they were harder than most games out at the time and the control scheme was pretty bad. However, no other mech game that I have ever seen has offered what the AC series does in terms of the freedom to build your mech, inside and out, and learn to pilot it--nor have I seen any other mech game emphasize the importance of developing both of these skill sets in tandem.

That said, this is the first game that I've paid full price for, that I've paid for on release, and that I deliberately avoided too many spoilers for in years. I knew FromSoft to be a good company that produced high-quality games and I trusted that they learned their lessons from AC5 as well as understood the importance of keeping AC's identity separate from Souls. In most ways, that trust was justified--except that last part. If/When they make AC7, I won't be so trusting again.

I think one of the big things that bugs me about AC6 is that it feels like an ultra trimmed down version of what 3 and 4 should be if they were combined. It feels very feature sparse.

Yeah, I'm not defending 5. That game was a sh*tshow because From got their priorities wrong.

Just curious, what should AC be now, because I played a few of them, and they weren't that engaging. This one is okay.

I wrote a review of my actual complaints, but let me see if I can provide a quick tl;dr...

1. Boss fights suck. They just aren't fun. Hard or not, don't care. They feel awful to play. A big part of this is that the mechanics-heavy emphasis of boss fights is a Souls focus, whereas earlier AC games had some level of it, but typically not paired with such incredibly spongey bosses.

2. Break bar and pulse armor suck. The break bar in particular really feels like it has no place in a proper AC game. Pulse armor would be tolerable if it were balanced against standard weapons somewhat better.

3. New boost system feels awful.

4. Mech not facing camera direction is awful.

5. Build diversity feels substantially less than previous titles.

6. The game spikes difficulty seemingly at random and doesn't usually feel like you have the right tools for the job when it does. In previous AC titles, when I encountered these spikes I could just think about the encounter/mission and rebuild my AC accordingly. A bit of trial and error and I would figure it out. This game doesn't feel like that. The intro mission is particularly bad for this reason, but Balteus is pretty aggressively awful as well. Regular bosses in this game feel like the bonus super bosses in a couple of the other titles.

Lastly, and I didn't put this in my review, but the UI/targeting feels really janky. I especially don't like having important weapon info on the target instead of my HUD (such as weapons overheating).

It's a lot of little things, but it's just apparent that Souls had a massively negative impact on the design philosophy of this game and deeply compromised its identity.

1. Okay on the bosses. I feel this is just going to be based on subjective criticism, but I think boss fights are extremely similar, just less janky and easy to cheese than previous titles.
AC bosses in previous titles were good, but anything other than AC bosses just felt stale and bad. I'm not a HUGE fan of some fights in 6 almost REQUIRING you to switch to a light build, or heavy build, but that's just how Armored Core has always been, so I can't say it's new.

2. I admit I'm not a fan of BOTH Pulse Armor and Break Bar. Pulse Armor feels like it's an inelegant solution to players over-optimizing. It's just Break Bar part 2, I feel there should be some kind of different mechanic to it.
Break Bar, on the other hand, I LOVE! If only because it gives you a gameplay reason to run into enemies with your tank treads, or kick them in the face. It adds depth to the gameplay and gives more flavor to the variety of legs you have to choose from.
I can understand not liking change, and preferring the old style, but I still think the break bar is a good addition.

3. The boost system feels awful at first, true. When you get past Chapter 1 and get better parts it feels fine, even awesome, but this is just a subjective opinion regardless.

4. Mech not facing the camera... Again, subjective? Also, I thought there was an option to change it so you always faced the camera? I know if nothing else, toggling the Dark Souls lockon changes it so that you face the camera, but obviously that's not ideal.

5. I honestly can't give much of an opinion about build diversity. I played the older Armored Core games casually, and probably badly. 6 obviously is going to take a hit compared to 4 and 5 when it comes to the depth of AC assembly because it lacks internal shoulder parts and such.

6. You're right, 6 has random difficulty spikes. Just like it's predecessors. There are very many missions in the past titles that I hit a brick wall in. At least in 6 I can grind my way to getting the parts I needed for the job, as opposed to my recent playthrough of For Answer, where I basically had to restart from scratch because I didn't have any way of getting what I needed for the mission.

I don't know, I feel like you're looking at the old Armored Core games as someone who completed them to the point of knowing how to min-max and forgetting your first time playthrough. A lot of the points you bring up are very present in the old games.
There is no consequences to handling money in this game. If you lose at a mission or pvp you should be set back in funds.

That and PVP is a joke. I don't see the point of being put against a player with two or more tier higher gear expecting the lower level player to be able to win.

It's true the older games had their learning curve, and yes, I played them to the point of mastery. The difference is that while those titles felt difficult at times, they always felt fair. This game feels like it handicaps you at every turn before unleashing a silverback gorilla on you inside a tool shed. It doesn't feel like it rewards creativity, skill, or even learning as much the older titles did. It seems to have this weird paradoxical feeling of "there is definitely a right way to beat it, but it doesn't matter what choices you make." The bosses are the chief reason for this because they are so out of place compared to everything else in the game--and even compared to all the other games.

It's just not AC.
Whats Souls about it???

The boss design and combat limitations that didn't exist in other AC games.
Always hilarious when some random plebian thinks they have more authority over what a "Insert Title" game should be then the developers who have made every entry in the series. "AC" is what FromSoft wants it to be buddy, if you don't like the changes in this itteration then kick rocks. The devs aren't here to placate you and you alone. The game is doing quite well and that means they've once again hit a good mark with the game.

Can't please everyone and you apparently are part of the small unhappy crowd. Sucks but that's life.

Because of course, anything that becomes popular = absolutely good.
It's not like From Software has a legion of fanboys who take any ♥♥♥♥ from them after they had such extreme success with the Souls series.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I recently played all the AC games in the past 2 years for the first time, and the only real difference I feel are slight variations and that the Bosses in 6 are more designed than previous titles.
