Arma Reforger Hosting
Suppose you were to set-up a server for hosting, you'd need a fast multithreaded processor, plenty of fast RAM and a good nvme, (and a FINE fiber connection!) would you also need a GPU though, I mean like a good good one or it doesn't even matter since it only serves content and doesnt render any actual scenes? Never hosted one so IDK.

Not sure if GPU handles any of the load or not, I do know I host Conflict PVE on my wifes laptop with no issues and its not recent at all. It will mainly depend on the number of players you plan on being connected. I would image the more players you have, the higher the specs would need to be. I only host for 3 to 6 players.

Good example of minimum specs I had in mind, just wasnt sure if GPU plays a big role or none at all, seems you only need a basic display adapter and not much else, I would award you but I'm spent at this point!

I run quite a few, and for small groups under 10, it is not that hard on hardware.
8GB and RAM can support around 50 or so mods and about 2 days of running before a reboot.
I have a couple on 4790 intel's and some on Xeon's using my clusters.
If you have a low player base, use linux, stand up something quick and test it out.
Will only take you a few hours if you are savy and can test it out with some friends

thx thx
U mentioned Xeon clusters, are you hijacking work servers or do you actually have access to workstations like that, I even had the idea of running one on an 8GB rasberry since in theory it would only serve content and handle the netcode for the most part, is this too far?

Also a very fast way to get a server going is Arma Reforger Dedicated Server Tool. During its installation it installs the games dedicated server files. After that its as simple as filling in the fields of the GUI with server name, address, etc. It also has a tic to run stable or experimental. Unless your download speed holds you back, it takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish to be up and running.

Yeah gpu doesn't matter for hosting.

This game prefers higher single threaded performance CPUs 6 or 8 cores. Newer is better. Id recommend at least a 5600x or 5800x if you want good performance from the get go. Or data center or Intel equivalent.

The oldest I would ever recommend would be an older xeon e3 1270v6 version. Approx 8 year old quad core. It will do okay with one single server instance up to 50 players.

Mods and ai / bots eat up more power and imo after the recent destruction of buildings update it's a little more resource intensive.

If you get too old or not enough power when a lot of people start to connect it will run like doo doo and the server fps will stay in the yellow non stop or worse red and crash.

If you are just starting out and don't expect over 50 players, the xeon e3 1270v6, 32gb ram, ssd, 1gb port, can be rented very cheap from various hosting providers. From the $30's to $40's range and you get the whole box to yourself with anti ddos.

You will have to setup and manage the server yourself though, set up everything manually.

Psychz networks has them in the mid $30's if you email them on this exact box.

If you are expecting over 50-100 players or so I would go for a 5600x or 5800x but you are going to be more like $80-$100 from various hosts, but it will have 64gb ram most likely and probably a nvme.

I run an Everon Co op server on a Ryzen 1305G (embedded dual core processor) with 8gb DDR4. I only ever have 3 people max in the server but it is running 24/7 often without issues. I haven't tried it since the building destruction update but I think you could likely get away with hosting a low player count co op server on a rpi or other relatively low performance hardware

I have a bunch of them.
Been building server's for a really long time for things, so I have a lot of them laying around

up to 10 players really doesn't take much, its when you start getting to 20's and 30's players joining with a lot of mods you will notice you need a decent machine. Over 50 you need something like a 5600x and 32gb ram minimum, ssd is ok but nvme is better. As long as it was fiber really 100Mbps up and down or 200Mbps up and down is plenty for 50. With 200Mbps you could go more players easily.
