Animation, Programming, and Game Design
As of late, expecially with the Saxxies, it has me thinking about careers, specifically the above mentioned. I can see me finding joy in all three(currently) if I really pushed to master them, but I know that when it comes to Animation and Programming as careers, you need to focus on one to really get far with bigger companies. Indie Teams, the reverse, having more skills means more chances.
What do you guys think?

i think all three are probably more fun as a hobby than a career lol.

keeping in mind that i don't really know what i'm talking about: i assume with all three of these that it's very difficult to have stability and job security. i think a lot of time they get hired for a particular job for a particular amount of time, then "let go" when development cycle is over with and then they have to find something new. not really a life i'd like to live, but then again i don't like my own life either so what do i know? chase ur dreams.

Check with your local labour information board and colleges to research courses required and current salary rates for the different fields. Having transferable skills is always best.

If you are still in school, ask your Guidance Counsellor to research what it is that you have to do to realize your dream.

It is less the salary and more of just being at a fork in the road.
Currently I'm taking courses in both animation and programming, so I know by the end of the courses I'll have a better idea of which are best for me.
But what gets me is if I find both equally good paths to take.
I'll have to pick one over the other at some point.

Being specific, I can see similarities in both:
Both involve a person giving life to something
Programming more so the physics and such, making things tick
Animation more so the visual aspects, making things visually interesting

Logically I admit programming is really the better bet for getting into the video game industry, and I could always animate on the side.

The benefit of both is that as you program, you have an idea of what restriction the characters and the environment have and can plan your code around that. vice-versa if you decide to go down the animation trail, you can foresee programming problems as you develop your rigs and helpers.
So either way it is good to learn both now, choose later
