Invisible Garry's Mod models in SFM
Of course, when you are importing GMod models and items into SFM you are going to encounter some problems. My problem however is that I have put the model, all it's materials and everything in its folder, into the usermod folder in SFM. I believe I set it up right, but when I open up the model browser I find the model but it is invisible. I can't see any wire frame but I can see the model's collision box.

I think other people may or may not have complained about this but I swear, I've been looking for answers and no help yet. I even watched Jimer Lins 'SFM Tip of the day' video on YouTube and followed his instructions but still the model is invisible. I get the feeling I might've missed a step or there is a missing folder.

Just to say I am copying the Alyx Fakefactory NPC and I downloaded the model from garry', oh, and here is the folder's contents (the things in the model's folder):


- 'lua -> autorun -> [model name].lua'
- 'materials -> models/VGUI [models -> Adriana/FF_Humans/ALYX] [VGUI -> entities -> Alyx Fakefactory.vmt/Alyx Fakefactory.vtf]'
- 'models'


- 'credits'
- 'info'

I've seen two videos on YouTube which have the model working, its just that I can't figure out what is wrong.

Any help or suggestions would be welcomed.

Did you check the console for errors? That's the first thing to do, that can usually give you a good idea of what's wrong.

The consle has a lot of errors for particles and some materials, but I can't see an error for the model I ported.

This is a very texture "broken" model...

Model files go into usermod\models (no deeper)

Materials go into usermod\materials\models\Adriana and usermod\materials\models\FF_Humans just like the zip is packed

DO NOT port the lua folder

The model will seem translucient when spawned into SFM... From there you have to edit the phong and other vmt commands to make her opaque.

It's throwing checksum errors. It wasn't hexed properly.


Yup, fixed it. All you have to do is open aly.mdl in a hex editor and edit the first two lines so they look like this:

49 44 53 54 2c 20 20 20 34 52 d4 0d 41 6c 79 2e
6d 64 6c 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20

(bascially edit Alyx.mdl to be Aly.mdl instead)

The Model ports fine... All the animations work as well. The Textures are way out to lunch. Phong and translucient commands not used properly... I'd scrap them all and start building my own vmts.

Bascially I wanted to get the model working without the use of complicated programs but I will give hex editing the file a shot. Also, I am using this model:
