So what's going to happen to this game since MS shutdown studio?
Will Steam remove it or still leave it on the store.

It'll stay on Steam.

i mean, have they ever removed a game with a publisher because the devs shut down? excluding live service games/mmos i guess

The only problem might be the licensed soundtrack, but they do have a "Streamer Mode" that replaces the licensed songs with original soundalikes that are damn good in their own right. Too Big To Fail and Intruders are on my playlist for life. So yeah, they might remove the licensed songs and make Streamer Mode just the default way to play, so the game will stay. I hope it turns out that way anyway...

but who's gonna remove the song? clearly not tango. microsoft probably won't ask any other party to do it since removing the game is easier.
It'll probably stay on steam for the time being, the real question is gonna be whether Microsoft is gonna spend effort to patch out the licensed music when the music licenses run out or if this is just gonna get delisted to save dosh.

Well, the licensed music is probably just a couple of files that are being referenced by the code (at least before compilation), so it wouldn't be too hard for MS to remove them, force streamer mode to be enabled, compile an update, and send out the update. Then again, I don't know too much about game dev, especially in Unreal Engine, so I may be talking complete nonsense.

Here's a question, and this may very well be a google search away. But can we disable auto-update for Hi-Fi Rush, so if they do spontaneously patch the licensed music out, we can hold onto it?

you can, but only if you never launch the game via steam.

In theory, if I have it set to not auto-update, wouldn't it launch in steam like usual? This isn't exactly a live-service game, so it's not like it has to phone home every 5 seconds.

Not sure what you mean but the only option to prevent auto-updates simply ties the update starting to launching the game, so not automatically starting the update. It will only start the update if you start it via your downloads and launch the game.

Not very useful for Hi-Fi Rush, but it is definitively the only way to stop updates from happening. Doesn't mean much unless it can be launched without steam somehow.

the game has copyrighted music but the liscense will eventually expire, and since there's no dev team available anymore to patch the music out and swap it for the streamer friendly mode, the game will no longer be available from that point on

you think bethesda would care enough? why shouldn't they just delist the game?

Why would they remove it? The development studio may be gone, but that doesn't mean the IP goes along with it. For example, the Telltale Games are still readily available despite the original studio shutting down.

I wouldn't even be surprised if Microsoft develops a sequel for this game considering its huge success.
