Greenhousing: Need roof?
I just wonder if i need to put a roof over my farming area to protect my harvestables or can i exploit rain and save energy?

Without a roof, I've been subject to lightning strikes and destroyed crops.
(You get to reclaim the seed.)

With a wooden roof, the plants get no light and do not grow (even with glass walls.)

It has to be a glass roof for the greenhouse.

Roof blocks rain.
You will find that the sprinklers energy requirements are negatable in later game.
Drones costs 300 each, and you potentially have at least 7 of them running simultaneously (there are 8 minable resources), Trees you still have to do manually.

Get the Forester Blueprint and no longer do trees manually :P

Not that far yet ;p ... Still fixing my power situation ... O need MOAR! (Batteries, solar, wind*)

*= current plan having everything on the main base powered by wind, and have batteries as backup. solar only charges batteries.

As I have posted elsewhere, I choose not to build a greenhouse, at least not at the stage I am at. I have a farm with 60 plots (5 sprinklers each watering 12 squares). I can expand the farm at any time without having to move walls. When it rains, my crops are watered by the rain, so it doesn't matter when the solar panels stop working. When I am at home during a thunderstorm, I go inside and only quickly run outside to pick crops that are harvestable. I haven't been struck by lightning yet and only a handful of crops die.

The problem with that approach is: Seeds, you need an eff-ton of seeds for that. Maybe with the higher seed drop of the current version it is doable, but you build a long up to get those seeds, and if you can craft seeds you should be having enough materials to roof your crops.

No roof and no walls = loss of crops during wind. You can make up for it with more plots, but IMHO that is more work than just build them indoors.
I currently have 36 plots and produce so much excess I hardly harvest them all.

I found the forester to be awfully slow for the amount of resources you have to put in and the time you have to wait. I'd rather spend 2 minutes felling and replanting 10 trees to get the amount of wood I need =(
I have confirmed that a glass roof is essentially the requirement for avoiding storm damage AND allowing rain to water your crops when your rainfall sensor shuts off your sprinklers (using logic box obv)
I settled for half wood wall, and last half glass, then built purely glass roofs atop.

does the wood help? I have no idea, but my next big project is testing a multi-layer style greenhouse. Why would i do that? Because this is a casual game, I love a tiny construction challenge.
My Greenhouse looks like this, and I've never had problems with storms destroying my crops.

This way, I can use a rain detector to turn off my sprinklers, although I'm at the point where the energy usage doesn't matter.

EDIT: Okay, perhaps you DO need a roof.. lightning just took out two of my paprika plants, the last two I needed for the trade, dagnammit!

Didn't know the glass roof lets the rain water in. I built a five-story greenhouse and put sprinklers on each level, works like a charm.
