If it wasn’t a niche we would have multiple AAA fighting games per years and few copycats per month.
Again - a single 3D fighter every few years. Maybe Tekken is mainstream but the genre is dead. Do we even have any AAA fighting game coming out in the next few years?
Not a single other active 3D fighting game exists. Tekken8 is the only 3D fighter. It’s the whole genre.
This 6y old game is dead and it’s an uber trash low budget shadow of what SC1 and SC2 was. They didn’t even bother to give two costumes per character. It’s so cold dead that it will be replaced by a 25y old Street Fighter 3 at EVO.
No , its because they found a more lucrative way of doing things.
The base game cost 55 dollars, have 32 characters and 16 stages, and if you buy the deluxe edition, you are paying half the game base price for only four characters (you get skins but who cares about that) , or five characters for 30 dollars if you buy them separated.
Why would they release more than one game per generation if they can milk more his customers doing things the way they are doing now ?
Looking at super smash bros ultimate, mortal kombat 11 and tekken 7 sales, its hardly a niche genre.
And tekken 8 and street fighter 6m probably mortal kombat 1 too will sell more than its predecesors.
You need to know how to make fighting games, its the same for example with first person shooters.
For example, did you saw capcom making a lot of first person shooters ? no because that genre its not one of their strenghts,
But for the people that know how to make them (fighting games), its lucrative, i dont need to write another example, the one of the previous comment its enough.
DOA, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Toshiden, Bloody Roar. All dead.
Capcom used to make like few fighting games a year but almost all their franchises are dead. SNK used to be big but their new games are like indie games now.
The genre is dying out sadly.
