Which game do I start in Steam: this or the expansion?

Quick question -- does starting the expansion, Alexandria, also give me access to the main campaign of the game, or would I have to start each separately to play the content of each? There are separate listings for both, so it's a bit confusing.

Well the only thing that's really separate are the achievements. You can run the old campaign in Alexandria just fine, but you won't get any achievements
