Just happened to me and I was looking for confirmation that it was indeed a softlock and I was not just being bamboozled by the narrator. That was my first playthrough, lol.

Who to say this isn't part of the narrator grand (Not really) scheme?
The more we know of the narrator, the LESS sense he makes...
