Train wont switch terminal at the station
I have 8 train tracks with a switch connecting all of them, there are 7 available termnials, one train has a breakdown at one terminal and the next train cannot move into the station due do this, why cant it just switch to one of the other 7? seems like a oversight, the train should recognize that this terminal is buy and just switch, instead my entire railway is shutdown due to one train not being able to just switch terminal at the switch, makes no sense, I hope this gets fixed cause its annying as hell

(Presuming you connected all your station tracks with a gridiron.).

Probably the first train to enter the station had allready got an assigned path that is blocked by the outgoing path of the train that is broken at your station. If so I'm afraid that's a situation that won't get fixed. It's just a consequense of the combination a breakdown at a 'unfortunate' moment/position and the way the game works.

Placing a maintenance tower near a station can reduce the number of breakdowns in it's area.

good way to get at least a little control of this is to tell the train the exact plattform where it should leave the startting stations and the destination station.

Totally agree that whole network shutting down for "days" due to a breakdown miles away is silly.

The Wider the Gridiron, the (Much) Longer it is, and if a train breaks down in the Middle of the Gridiron while crossing from tracks from one track to another track, you are screwed. With it affecting all 8 tracks (if it is 8 wide). You will get more trains through at the same time with Gridirons that are not so wide. Without the danger of one breakdown affecting so many Trains.

It would be better to go no wider than 4 tracks for a Gridiron.

Most of the time I stick to a double track (between the Stations) connecting to a 2 Track Gridiron connecting to 2 Tracks in each Station. For really Busy Stations I might connect to a 3 or 4 track wide Gridiron.

I would rather have another 2nd parallel double track next to the first double track, each with their own Gridiron, if things get really busy with Freight trains. That way they can go in different directions to other Cities and Resource Stations.

I would already have split off a separate Express double track connecting with it's own Gridiron to dedicated tracks in the Station, a lot earlier, when things start getting moderately busy, or more precisely when I have saved enough cash to pay the costs of building the separate Express tracks. They will pay off the investment quickly.

Eventually, the Express Trains will even get their own 2nd Station in Major Cities, with the 1st Station being all Freight.

Take a look at the high speed network in Italy. (Not a total lock-down, but a completely disturbed network with many hours of delays in the whole country for a day or so are quite common.).

Breakdowns over a switch are the worst place they can happen, but even with the many things I'd like to see changed, it's handled pretty realistically. There are lockouts that happen preventing the use of certain other switches until a train already on them clears the area.

A train getting stuck 20 feet further away can mean the difference between no big problem and major delays.
