Community Code of Conduct & Cheating Policy
We love our community, -
- and we hope that you find it to be a welcoming place where you feel able to freely discuss our game with us.

Separately, we also want our multiplayer experience to be as welcoming - we enjoy playing our games and want to be able to play a match without worrying about unsportsmanlike behaviour.

In order to keep our community as a place where staff, developers and new players can feel comfortable and welcomed, it’s necessary to have some rules in place.

Of course, no-one wants to read a huge policy document unless it’s really needed, so we have four simplified versions of our full policy, which we’ll include below. They are:

1) The Behaviour Rule:
> If you can’t be nice, at least be civil.
> Do not use profane, hostile, or offensive language.
> Do not be elitist, demeaning, or troll either in the game or outside it.
> Do not provoke people for a laugh.
> We have a zero tolerance policy for attacks on staff or moderators.

2) The Fairplay Rule:
> Do not cheat.
> Do not use “edges”, “binds”, “macros”, “mods”, “scripts” or any kind of tool to gain an advantage.
> Playing in a way that is unfairly detrimental to the enjoyment of other players, I.E. deliberate team killing, griefing, the use of exploits to troll or degrade, “not playing”, etc will also be punishable at the discretion of our staff.

Note: This section of Policy changed on 09/07/2025 - we will honour appeals for single player / modding anti-cheat bans before this date, as long as they didn't occur in a multiplayer game.

Any overt cheating - including seeing any match data you should not be able to see with any editor or tool - will result in an immediate, permanent ban from multiplayer.

3) The “Adult/Dark Humour” Rule:
> Do not use pornographic or profane avatars, do not draw the same in any map tool or editor.
> If modding is available, it should not contain adult or dark humour content.
> Do not make “Dark” humour jokes - I.E. Anything that is hostile, offensive, political, or at the expense of any group of people.

4) The “Intolerant Presence” Rule:
If you make it clear by your speech or actions that you support or condone the position of a hate group. I.E. any sexist, racist or exclusionary groups, extreme nationalist(s), supremacists, etc - (list not exhaustive), you will be banned from our community without warning and your access to multiplayer functions will be removed. You are not welcome in our community and I hope this rule makes that abundantly clear. That you “were joking” shall not be a defence against this ban.

Violations of these rules will result in:
> 1 week ban for a first offence, of a rule that does not warrant an instant ban response.
> 1 month ban for a second offence, of a rule that does not warrant an instant ban response.
> A third offence will always result in a permanent ban.

Moderators may, at their sole discretion, give up to 3 warnings for minor infractions of the behaviour rule. These will occur before the first ban is given. Moderators may, at their sole discretion, reduce a ban to a warning with a sincere apology for infractions of the behaviour rule.

We reserve the right to ban anyone for any reason without notice, if we deem them to be disruptive to the harmony or well being of our communities. Bans made by us under this provision will be given only by a Community Manager, or an executive staff member, and not by any moderator or developer. Platforms like Steam, Gog, etc, also reserve this right for their own staff and wish to make it clear that we cannot intervene if you are banned by a platform.

If you have any questions about this policy or a ban, please message BASupport@slitherine.com.

Terminology
Some terminology that is uncommon outside of gaming is explained here:

“Not playing” - Being in a game and not playing the game while telling other players that you're not going to play. This is different to simply being AFK in that it is attention seeking and trollish.

Binds / Scripts / Macros - Automation that makes performing complex actions automatic. I.E. you press a single key, and the game automatically selects a unit, prepares an action, and confirms the action. Turning many actions into a single button press.

Edging - Aggressive configuring of the game, beyond the settings in the games internal menu, to gain advantage. I.E. Removing graphical detail via drivers to make seeing the enemy easier. Expanding view area beyond standard configurations, etc. From “Gaining an Edge”.

Griefing/Trolling - The act of intentionally hindering your own team, be it with friendly fire, purposely giving away victory conditions/kills, telling the opposing team useful information. Blocking or purposely hindering friendly players units, "Throwing the game" type behaviour, etc.

Other notes
The fairplay rule also covers Stream Sniping, which is using a Streamers Stream to give information to the team they are against, or to follow and harass the streamer.

However, this is difficult to prove - it is the Streamers responsibility to use a delay to prevent the worst of this behaviour - and follow up with us only if a particular person is proven to be a source of endless harassment.
