The game is using AI-generated content without a proper Steam Page disclaimer!
This is absolutely unacceptable. 11 bit studios has been caught using AI in The Alters without ANY disclaimer on the Steam page.

Players found literal AI prompts left in the Portuguese translation with instructions like "Translate the following text from English to Brazilian Portuguese". This isn't just unprofessional - it's straight up disrespectful to players paying full price for this game.

To make it all even worse, it's not just translations. There are leftovers from AI prompts even in the english version of the game.

Steam requires developers to disclose AI use for a reason. We have the right to know what we're buying. If you're going to use AI to create content, be honest about it instead of trying to hide it.

Oh No! Annnnnnd moving on...
Damn, did they auto translated every languages via IA instead of paying translation studios ? I guess credits would say if so but I haven't watch them until the end

Would explain why French translation is weird too, but some mistakes are so weird and consistant they looked like just unprofessional translators who did some sentences. A shame if that's via IA some sentences also aren't translated, they are still in English including in middle of dialogues

Meh, who cares. Google translate has existed forever. Just because there's the buzzword of "AI" in front of an auto-translation tool doesn't change it from a tool to evil.

It's just a computer translating text.

Not sure on this one. It would appear that some parts of translations were AI-generated and some were translated by people.

But I need to point out once again, that the issue is not just translations. Even original english text seems to be generated by the AI in some places.

A lot of people. The fact that Steam even created an entire dedicated section for AI notice is not just some random feature they added because Valve was bored.

Personally I don't even mind AI translations or any other generative AI content. But I expect big companies like 11 bit to play fair and put proper AI notice, instead of pretending it's not.

I see one person that only cares. I really am not "trying" to be rude, aside from initial comment. But, seems like wasted energy for something that really just does not matter.

You realise this is tiny text on a background prop, and only exists as a graphic and not as something you're expected to actually read. In the past things like that could have Ipsum etc stuff on it, or random gibberish. This isn't even slightly an issue.

You may have a point regarding the translations, if those were indeed AI generated. But to use this screenshot as an example of AI generated content is a joke.

To be fair, Generative AI is a huge waste of energy for something that does not matter.

Every individual prompt burns enough energy to keep a single LED lightbulb running for 45 minutes. it actively pollutes the enviroment with every individual use.

They could have paid real, living people to do the translations instead, and not only NOT polluted the environment, but ALSO helped real, actual living people continue living by providing them employment.

There is quite frankly, not a single good reason to use generative AI for anything, it just doesn't have any upsides.

I'm crossing my fingers that this all ends up as a misunderstanding or a hoax, and they didn't actually use it, but in this day and age? i wouldn't be surprised.

Yall genuinely should not even be arguing with OP and have no grounds to do it at all.

its fine if you wanna play this game
its fine if the developers wishes to use AI for the creation if ICONs and backgrounds and whatever

Simply PUT a disclosure in storepage
thats all.
Not seeing one leads me to believe that theres some lack of trust from the devs side

I used that screenshot to point out that the issue was not limited to translations alone. As for the evidence that AI was used for translations, you can find english discussion alongside with screenshot in this LinkedIn thread: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/luciledanilov_look-i-love-the-alters-its-brilliantly-activity-7344697496150941696-6DpR?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAACFwRJcBo8ztz4p65T7Qr5wet5gvrk6NOwc

I've linked a LinkedIn discussion in my previous post. There are translators in the comments who claim that they worked on The Alters and are outraged by the fact that 11bit allegedly added some AI translations on top of that. Can't blame them really, since they're credited as translators, so if there is anything AI-translated, it gets pinned on them.

One could argue if its localizers who used AI, but it just seems unlikely, given that multiple languages, including english that used non-translative prompt, were affected.

Thank you!

Honestly, I don't mind AI translations. In fact, I think that in a situation where you don't have budget for professional translation, AI translations are an amazing tool to utilize.

But AI notice has been added to Steam for a reason. Just be transparent about use of AI, that's all. I find it incredibly annoying that many indie games with solo-devs have no issue adding the AI notice, yet studio as big as 11bit chooses to basically pretend (?) they don't use AI.

I'm fully agree on that. This need to be disclosed if the company is using it. I had no idea the alters has it.
with search becoming AI generated... do we need to disclose everything related to search as being AI generated?

Say they use AI search to find a person to do the translating... was that not also AI generated? You're excluding everyone the AI left out form the opportunities.

Not at all. Steam is very clear about what is supposed to be disclosed: AI generated content that ends up in the game (so just using AI tools during development is fine) and Live-generated AI content, so things that allow players to generate something on the run.

Your example of AI search doesn't count, because its not part of the end product. Same thing applies to using AI assistants in programming. You don't have to disclose that, because the source code by itself is not part of the end product either - its compiled output is.
