TFlops - What are they and how do I get/build them?
So I've got to the basic robotic stage of my island, but I have now Idea where to go from here.

It say I need TFlops to make robotic things run/work but after looking around the game I still don't know what they are or how I would get them.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

A late game noob.

As for how to get them, once you research Basic Computing, you will unlock the Mainframe Computer building. This building is like the Power Generator, except that it will produce TFlops. If I remember correctly, the building can either be upgraded or you can increase the number of data slots to increase the amount of TFlop output.

Correct in how to get them, but wrong on the upgrading. Mainframe Computer is just that. A big computer. You cannot upgrade it. But with a bit more research you can build servers. And a data center. You can put the servers into the Data Center to produce TFlops. You need to give it chilled water as well, but the Data Center can take a lot of servers and thus, eventually, produce a lot of TFlops. You can also chain the centers, so you can (and eventually should) have more than one.

Open a web browser and search for Captain of industry tflops,

Or in game open research. Search for basic computing and data center.

It is a global resource like maintenances but unlike maintenances it is not buffered. You always need to be producing enough Tflops to run the buildings consuming it.

I'd say it's a good idea to get research servers asap and only build enough mainframes to reach that. Certainly do not try to run research IV on mainframe computing.

@MetalSpaceDust and @robbo are both spot on. But here is a simple layman's comparison...

Just like you need to produce XX kilowatts or megawatts of power to run all of your buildings that require electricity, there are buildings like the Robotic Assembly and Research Lab V buildings that require XX TFlops to function.

When you are ready to place a building that requires TFlops, you must be producing that many or more for the building to run.

Just like how Electricity shows how much KW's or MW's you are using and producing, TFlops will also show you your current TFlop usage and also how much you are producing. And just like Electricity, when your TFlop production drops below your usage, some buildings will stop running.

As for how to get them, once you research Basic Computing, you will unlock the Mainframe Computer building. This building is like the Power Generator, except that it will produce TFlops. If I remember correctly, the building can either be upgraded or you can increase the number of data slots to increase the amount of TFlop output.

Hope this helps. Cheers! :steamhappy::steamthumbsup:

Ahhh ok @Kaery, I knew there was some way to increase the TFlop output, I just couldn't remember which it was. Thanks! :steamhappy:

Thanks both Kaery & cygnus for combine answering the query for a CoI noob like myself!

Yeah, some things upgrade, others you have to build new. Can be tricky to remember all the different ones, I've made mistakes there before as well.

You're welcome. All of us started as noobs once, so don't be afraid to ask.

Heck, when I started out, the mainframe didn't exist and you had to find (or trade for) enough chips to make enough servers to get the TFlops to run that first chip maker. You had the choice of one (very, very, very slow) with the products just going through again and again, or three, which would do all the phases of one stage before sending it back around again.

There's my 'back in my day, we walked uphill to school. Both ways!' story. xD
