Game Crash Troubleshooting

If you are encountering game crash issues with Aliens: Fireteam Elite on Steam, then our stability improvement patches should help address many of these instances, but it’s still possible there might be other issues triggering your game crashes.

The following troubleshooting steps should help you either find a workaround or better identify the cause of your game crash.

  • Make sure your display drivers are up to date.
  • If your CPU or GPU slow down due to overheating or a power voltage drop this can cause issues.
  • If you are using a laptop, make sure it is plugged in.
  • If you are overclocking, or forcing settings high, or using special graphics card overrides, try turning them off or down to avoid overheating.
  • If you are running Windows in "eco mode" or "low power mode", then the CPU/GPU might get throttled. Run in Performance mode.
  • Running full screen and alt-tabbing to a window such that the monitor needs to resync might cause a device loss.
  • Verify that your monitor cables are completely plugged in. Changing monitor configuration will cause issues.
  • Use Steam to Verify the Integrity of your Game Files.
  • Make sure you have enough disk space; it’s recommended to at least have 1GB to spare.
Also make sure your antivirus isn't causing any errors. You can try either of these guides:

Networking Troubleshooting

There are a number of reasons for network connectivity issues. If you are encountering these kinds of issues with Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and even if another game works fine, there might still be another factor causing these issues. Since the game uses peer to peer hosting, and not central servers, some of these general networking suggestions may help.

General Networking Suggestions:
  • Avoid using Wi-Fi connection. One example of how this is subject to interference can happen even with Microwave ovens (including the neighbors'). Wi-Fi usually picks back up again, but it does cause latency and packet loss issues. A direct connection via Ethernet cable is recommended.
  • Avoid being behind several routers or firewalls. Ideally, you'd be connected immediately after the firewall (for most people, this is the cable modem/router).
  • Avoid lots of other heavy traffic on the network. If multiple people in the house are streaming video, especially video conferencing calls (which often get priority over game traffic) then you might have packet latency and loss.
  • Avoid doing lots of other networking or streaming on the same computer that you're playing the game on.

  • Playstation 4 and 5 especially have problems with people who are "NAT 3". Which means they are behind multiple routers. Try to be NAT 1 or 2. This guide may help you set this up[].
  • This issue should not affect PCs or Xboxes, but it is definitely better for your computer to not be behind multiple devices on the network.

All Platforms:
  • If you have an XB1, PS4, or a computer closer to the minimum specs, consider being invited into a game rather than inviting someone to yours. The inviter becomes the "host" of the game, so you want the host to be the one with the best performing system on the team.

Multiplayer Feature Restoring for Modified Games

With the December 14th, 2021 launch of Season 2: Point Defense for Aliens: Fireteam Elite, modded PC copies of the game can no longer access multiplayer features.

If you have added mods to your copy of Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and wish to restore its multiplayer features, you will need to manually remove any mods from your game’s directory. Once you’ve removed these files, run a verification on your files to restore access to multiplayer features.

Please note that your save file should still be preserved, however with mods, there is always some risk of compromising your save file.
