I'm having the same problem as well. I hope someone can answer us soon because it's quite frustrating ><

Same here, had this a while ago, now when I try to launch it, it just tells me "unable to start game yadda yadda yadda". I couldn't even hear an audio, I just got a black screen and ctrl-alt-delling from it says the application has crashed. So far, I have had no positive reaction to a Ubisoft product.

The image that shows the error has an invalid path file, noticed the two forward slashes back to back- "..Creed\\Assassins...". Try validating the game files.

I've tried that and alas it still doesn't want to work :-/

I had this issue these days and got a way to fix it, i was trying to run the game with desktop resolution @1920x1080 and had the black screen with sound, what i did, was to lower the desktop resolution down to 1440x900 and when i ran the game it worked, give it a shot !

The problem I had was that my graphics card (GeForce GTX 560) wonked out with AC1's crappy DirectX 10 version but was fine with the DirectX 9 version. So I went to the game directory (STEAM DIR/steamapps/common/Assassins Creed) and switched the two file names for the DirectX 9 and 10 versions. Then when I launched from Steam/Big Picture Mode everything worked just fine - aside from a little skip on the Ubisoft logo at the beginning.

The having to ALT+F4 bit to quit is still stupid. I would love if Ubi would update it for full big-picture support and clean up some of the messes but it's an old game and that'll never happen.

What do you mean by switching the names?

I also have a Geforce that blacks out with the DX10 version (sometimes). I just run the DX9 version whenever that happens and it's fine.

There are two files in the directory -- one called AssassinsCreed_Dx9 and another called AssassinsCreed_Dx10. Just switch the names of the files so that Dx9 becomes Dx10 and Dx10 becomes Dx9.

Incidentally, this worked perfectly for me. Boo to Ubisoft for releasing a "Director's Cut" that has so many issues.
