GL Wyrmstake no longer sticks in monster?!
Either I'm doing something wrong or they changed Wyrmstake a lot from World.
I read some GL guides and they say the stake stays in the monster body and when you shoot it there's extra damage. The stake supposedly can be shot with shells (for extra damage) or even Wyvern Fire for multiple extra hits. But the stake is gone as soon as Wyrmstake Cannon attack is finished :(

Yeah, no. Wyrmstake Cannon sticks it in, it does some small hits and one or two large ones but that's it. The stake is gone.
Was it changed?

(from game8.co:
The Wyrmstake Cannon is Gunlance's main DPS improving skill. It almost doubles your damage so always make sure that the monster has a Wyrmstake cannon in it and keep firing on it with shells!
)

Stake is gone. Palico Bombardiers can use a variant of that skill tho (you'll do blast damage when hitting the stake they attach to the monsters).

Huh, that's really bad. Besides just SPAMMING Wyrmstake (only really good with long shells), doing extra damage by firing at the the stake was a great way to focus on specific parts in World. Too bad :(

Also on a side note, WTF did some stupid trainee braindead designer think to FINALLY introduce longrange movement but at the same time make it impossible to charge shell (and thus, quick Wyrmstake)?!
That's so incredibly stupid, it just shows how little they like GL :(

There is no slingshot ammo to load into GL, because there is no slingshot so take a wild guess about that move.

that logic doesn't work given that wyrmstakes weren't being loaded with slinger ammunition in the first place

CAPCOM were angry that Gunlance was doing OK damage in Iceborne and had to steal from it to feed their babies Longsword and Bow.

There were 2 types in iceborne,
The normal wyrmstake which is basically the same in rise
The slinger wyrmstake which sticks to the monster and blows up each time you shell, which isnt in rise

Yep. Coupled with charged shells not doing extra stagger or trip damage I have no intention of playing GL in Rise.

It was my main in all of IB and most of base world.

ah, i see
it's probably quite easy to infer how little time i spent with iceborne versus that of base world

the sticky WS is still there but only the Wide shelling type can use it

The wide stake is different to that in World. It doesnt do damage when you shell it, it just ticks once and explodes, and does KO/exhaust damage as well. This is new to Rise.

Wait, Wide has a sticky stake, then? Or Wide just deals 1x damage (KO) and then the stake vanishes like with any other shell type?

Anyway, I think I got confused with the slinger which indeed stuck to monster body.

All stakes "stick" to the monster, but you don't do extra damage by shelling any of them. They just do their tick damage and then explode. Normal stakes tick around 13 times, Long stakes tick around 15 times, and Wide tick once for way more damage tha the others then explode.

Once the wyrmstake is in the monster, you cannot affect it in any way. It just goes.

It might come back for Sunbreak in some capacity. Considering Gunlance shelling damage is fixed based on the shell level of the weapon, the Wyrmstake cannon thing in Iceborne was a great way of giving the Gunlancer user some extra damage to compete with other MR weapons without upping the shell damage too much.

If memory serves, it essentially functioned like a +50% increase to shelling damage, so that's probably not necessary in Low Rank and High Rank, but it might become necessary again in Master Rank.

I hope we see it again, because it was fun. Lazy Poke-Shell-Poke-Shell-Poke-Shell etc gameplay with a Wide Gunlance was one of my guilty pleasures in Iceborne, lol.

I'm glade it's gone. need to use it first before anything else. if you fail, good luck spend another minute trying to stick it to monster unless you use trap. also if you aren't speed runner. you need to use it 1 or 2 time before the hunt end. argh. thk god it gone.

I didnt play World for quite a while, now coming back to GL in Rise (after IG got a bit boring) and boy, is my muscle memory and memory of monsters lacking.
Just tried Apex Diablos and I can't get out more than maybe 2 shells before having to Guard again. Every Wyrmstake is a big risk of getting hit, even the 'short' version (charged shell into WSC shortens WSC animation) gives me trouble.
I specifically built for Long Level 5 shells to get most out of WSC (and per-shell damage in general), kinda disappointed right now. With IG I never have those problems, it's so f*cking fast, mobile and still hard-hitting.
Gotta re-learn GL usage :|
