the entire point of a roguelike is that each failed run unlocks things that help you win your future runs, without that it's just a pointless waste of time if you die

Rogue is a great game, and you can play it for free in your web browser on the Internet Archive , or download it and play it in dosbox. Don't give your money to some random holding corporation that acquired the IP of a developer that went bankrupt, none of your money is going to the people who made the game....

It is known that none of the creators of Rogue are involved with this release. The original Rogue is not open source. There are places online where you can play free, open-source creations of Rogue. Some good ones are Rogue Collection (https://github.com/mikeyk730/Rogue-Collection), Rogue Clone IV (http://rogueclone.sourceforge.net/) and the versions by the Roguelike Restoration Project (info at http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=Roguelike_Restoration_Project).
