Better crossbow?
I'm still using the base crossbow and don't know where to get an upgrade.

My partner went with melee and we're able to craft new swords for her, but the only crossbow I see is the egg crossbow at the farmer's station which isn't much of an upgrade?

Where can I craft or buy better crossbows?

Near the Sun Haven town center there are merchant carts that sell crossbows for gold. They're fairly expensive! They won't always be there as the merchant carts switch either every week or every 2 weeks.

Oh interesting, I haven't paid much attention to those carts since I didn't realize they sold weapons! I'll keep an eye out for them, thank you :)

I would rather prefer if I could craft better crossbows on the workbench too instead, I mean we can craft swords and armor but not crossbows? Why not?

Depending on how far along you are, there is also a crossbow store in Nel'Vari :)

Rel Taar's in Nel'Vari is the best.

Yeah, I was just about to add, once you get access to the other cities (Monster City & Elven City) you get access to more vendors. The simplicity and extensiveness of this game is splendid, and they don't push you to do it, but instead encourage exploring and examining different people/items around the map.

I managed to get a heavy crossbow weapon now which is a f0cking joke. It still does less damage then the steel sword and upgraded fireball spell cast.

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed in crossbow :( Might have to start putting points into something else.

I don't have the TOP tier bow yet but my partner does insane damage in comparison with swords and magic. By the time I even get the top bow, they'll be even stronger.

Shame because I wanted to be an archer but I may have to give up on that.

Tip with Melee/Ranged combat = Hold down space bar, the jumping animation cancels out the attack-plant animation so you can effectively attack while moving.

Archer is not as strong as a swordsman, and it's explainable: the strong side of a crossbow is that you don't take damage, but at the same time, you don't deal as much damage to enemies compared to a sword. It's about balance.
A crossbow (if you invested your combat points in it) is excellent at the mines, as you shoot enemies before they even notice you. For fighting Dynus and bosses, magic+crossbow (while you recharge your magic ability) is a solid combo. Again, you take much less damage in ranged combat.

Crossbow is definitely weaker overall, but there are a lot of boosts in the skill tree that help it out a ton, so that in the end with a combination of movement speed + burn + critical etc. you can walk away and the enemy will die while you're not even attacking it.

I haven't properly tested this out in the dungeon/s etc. I'm a wimpy player who mostly wants to farm and forage and fish, so I'm cheesing it with the crossbow/s. Skilltree investment pays off a lot with crossbow, in terms of speed + after effects + critical hits that can stack etc.

Obviously if you can get the hang of melee that's probably the way to go. But crossbow has been doable in this game for me so far! And as a big scaredy cat who people just love to say 'git gud' at - it's got me down to the fourth level of the mines comfortably and easily, I never take damage, and I enjoy being able to stand back or even put rocks and trees between me and the enemy to take them down. The burn effect in particular can be incredible.

Egg crossbow is awesome, I used it most of my mid game!

Crossbows can be rebalanced by introduction ammunition types.
