Yeah I'm pretty disappointed in crossbow :( Might have to start putting points into something else.
I don't have the TOP tier bow yet but my partner does insane damage in comparison with swords and magic. By the time I even get the top bow, they'll be even stronger.
Shame because I wanted to be an archer but I may have to give up on that.
A crossbow (if you invested your combat points in it) is excellent at the mines, as you shoot enemies before they even notice you. For fighting Dynus and bosses, magic+crossbow (while you recharge your magic ability) is a solid combo. Again, you take much less damage in ranged combat.
I haven't properly tested this out in the dungeon/s etc. I'm a wimpy player who mostly wants to farm and forage and fish, so I'm cheesing it with the crossbow/s. Skilltree investment pays off a lot with crossbow, in terms of speed + after effects + critical hits that can stack etc.
Obviously if you can get the hang of melee that's probably the way to go. But crossbow has been doable in this game for me so far! And as a big scaredy cat who people just love to say 'git gud' at - it's got me down to the fourth level of the mines comfortably and easily, I never take damage, and I enjoy being able to stand back or even put rocks and trees between me and the enemy to take them down. The burn effect in particular can be incredible.
Crossbows can be rebalanced by introduction ammunition types.
