Market share.

Larger market share = the higher the market share, the more sales you get.
Matching genre = A small boost to sales.

Ideally, you want one that has both if you're not planning to get an exclusivity contract (not having one can make early game more challenging, but not impossible even in Legendary.)

In fact, when ordered by their market share, the publishers that are on top of the list (Microsoft, Nintendo) are better than those below, even if they have the same number of 'stars.' This is because the market share is actually measured from 1 to 100, so "five stars" are actually publishers that can have from around 90 to 100 points, and the 10% more does matter in the long run.

Edit to add: While the money the strongest publishers give you per unit is lower, the difference in total sales will mean you'll get more profit total per game you publish, compared to publishers with less 'stars.'

Note their favorite genres can change over time, so it might be Racing first but a year later it's Adventure. Once you have 5* relationships you can get them to love your favorite genre and get it trending at the same time, but you don't need to do any of that. It mostly seems to happen by luck once in a while when you release bestselling games.

Their genre changes at an absolutely random pace, and what it changes too is also random. I've observed subsidiaries being like that too.

Sega: Hey guys Skill is our favorite genre even though historically we've always been big on Platformers.
Me: Stop being stupid and release only Platform games.
Sega: Okay!
Sega, two years - and ten Platform games - later: Our favorite genre is now Visual Novels because why not?
Me: I hate you.

Subsidiaries are like the dumb teenager offsprings I never wanted to have.
