Team ninja is busy taking everything they learned from nioh and throwing it into the bin. So now all you have is wo long and rise of ronin.

It's weird how they are just regressing.

They're busy with other games.
One being their money maker; Dead or Alive: Xtreme
and the other is Ninja Gaiden, which has been on hiatus since 2012 (or 2014 if you count the Spin-off Yaiba)

Completed wo long, it was a very very stripped down nioh. Didn't want to try my luck at ronin, because it's probably a stripped down wo long.

Smart and useful comment though dude.

They are very busy now, creating new Ninja Gaiden in collaboration with Platinum Games (creators of Baynetta and Nier:Automata game series)

I hope you understand companies don't just stick to one formula and go with it.

Same think with Toukiden... now they are doing Wild Hearts S

Someone forgot to say that to EA and all the sports games they release, Activision with CoD, Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed and so on!

What kind of story would you even write for Nioh 3? Didn't we kind of end everything? Better to make new IPs or new games and they're already working on Ninja Gaiden.

Keep an eye out this year for news, they still have unnanounced titles!
Don't hold your breath, Koei-Tecmo is undergoing a major reorg to "refocus" on their bottom line and profitability.

tl;dr, I wrote a long summary on another thread in another koei game, but here's the 2 bulletins I'll copy-paste over.
https://steamcommunity.com/app/2288150/discussions/0/595142635298037455/?ctp=2

  • Hisashi Koinuma, the president of Koei Tecmo Games whose career highlights included programming the PS2 launch title Kessen and producing Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, will get a further promotion from the vice president of Koei Tecmo Holdings to its president in June 2025. He will also become the sole top leader of Koei Tecmo Games as its president, CEO, and COO in April 2025.

Interpret that as one would, potential masses of mediocore releases incoming if they persist on multiple game releases annually.

  • Another thing of interest spotted in the document pertains to Yosuke Hayashi. The Team Ninja veteran will resign from being a company director in June 2025.
So the producer for Nioh 1/2, Ninja Gaiden, and a bunch of zelda games (not involved with Wild Heart and Wo Long mess) is leaving.

*Koei has released their franchise sales numbers in a pdf, page 23.

it actually had nothing to do with Nioh besides being a mission based ARPG with rng loot

not every game needs to have the exact same combat system, Wo Long's combat was different but still great. It did some things better than Nioh, especially the human fights which weren't boring stunlocks anymore. The loot was also much more satisfying and fun to engage with.

Rise of the ronin actually has more combat depth than Nioh, maybe slightly less than Nioh 2 but it's a much worse game imo. Combat depth is not everything about a game.

"Managing both growth potential and profitability
◆ Steps toward vision
- Key factor for mid to long-term growth: Success in AAA titles, new genres and new IPs
- Build structure that allows us to consistently create large-scale hit titles in-house
To Become the World's No 1"

Well... nothing about re-release or sequels =/

nioh2 has more review counts on steam than DW:Origins, so maybe nioh2 sold ok/better? The latter part about producer leaving seems like bad news tho.
They have already provided a statement saying they had no plans to continue the Nioh series. Similar to Miyazaki's statement on continuing Dark Souls after DS3 wrapped up. Doesn't mean somebody can't decide to pick up the reigns at some point in the future, but as of right now it should be considered a closed chapter.

They'd sooner make a new IP that borrows mechanics from Nioh rather than continue that franchise. I'm fine with that. I didn't care for Nioh's story, and it's just the combat, mission structure and loot/customization that an easily be used in another IP.

I also haven't been keeping tabs on the people responsible for such elements, such as who the combat design lead was for the Nioh series, and whether or not they're still with the company or were head hunted by a rival. Could be the case that some key person just isn't there anymore, so they may consider an IP more or less dead until somebody decides they want to revisit. That's kinda like how the Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma series are at now, given Itsuno left Capcom. It's back in limbo.

From the game they released recently, it is unlikely they will do Nioh 3, all games after Nioh 2 came with simplified combat, reduced difficulty and single player oriented. I think that is the path they are going, so they can achieve more sales.
