I don't believe that the lasguns were forced to be white bolts, its just lazy.
They say that this is how they look in canon, yet you can refer to:
Space marine 2
Space marine
Darktide
Cadia stands (hammer and bolter, Warhammer TV.)
Angels of death (Warhammer TV)
Dawn of War 1,2.

These are all games and media that show canon depictions of Games Workshop Lasguns being RED BEAMS! If they really did get ordered to do it based on canon stuff, then games workshop really blew it for themselves. I don't have anything against the devs, but I'm just pointing out the obvious. Thanks so much, and cheers to an amazing DLC.

You can refer to the new Killteam trailer, seems like the direction they are moving whether people believe or not.

It was Hot Shot lasguns and volleyguns, which are distinctly different from Lasguns considering the fact that they are overcharged, which would explain white coloration, but it doesn't add up that this is happening with all weapons for this game. I find it dumb.

White bolts is the canon appearance of lasguns in the codex(es) and while GW allowed other colours and representations in the past, they are now enforcing the white bolts in all media.

This isn't exactly a new thing, as it was discussed in Gladius as well many years ago:

What is new, is that since the release of the 10th Edition Codex, the white bolts lore is being more restrictly enforced. The video game lore of "Lasers = Red" is being phased out.

I'm afraid that we are bound by licence to keep the appearance of the lasguns in the game and cannot offer any alternative, either.
GW moving to Stormtrooper looking bolts instead of beams? noooo! It's going to take weeks getting over this emotional trauma (only speaking for my self here). Save the beams Henry Cavill you're our only hope :D (uh oh now I see him coming on screen shooting a blaster rifle) edit: Saw the Killteam trailer, not sounding like a blaster rifle saved my day :)

How about Bolt vs Beam(let's forget colors, in DoW 2 they even used Amber lol)? Which one is the canon look for the BASIC LASGUN?

Edit: Lexicanum says BEAM and this is without any shadow of a doubt.
