Is this game worth trying?
I saw youtube vids about this game, and Im still not convinced. Is it worth trying? is it completely F2P? is it Pay2Win?

There's a number of convenience items that're pretty pricey. But otherwise no, it isn't pay to win. No, you have to pay for the expansions. The living world seasons you also have to pay for, but are unlocked for free if you log-in during a certain period of time.

The core game, however, is free. So I would recommend giving it a go. It also is highly depend if you're more casual or hardcore, and what you care about. If you like collecting armor and weapon skins, and grabbing achievements, you will love the game.

I hate this game becasuse its like the perfect mmorpg with its content, and its style, and its combat and classes.

Totally ruined by removing the endgame chase.

Its a really fun game, youll get tons of content out of it for free. eventually youll reach a why point and there will be an itch that GW2 never scratches due to this removal things to really chase.

PVP has been sort of ignored since launch, and was really the big draw of the game.

Devs focus on buy to experience living story content that is sorta like a narrated and usually decent single player narrative quest line. I think you can get them free while they are live but once the event ends it gets dumped on the cash shop.

No P2W at all, in fact, there really isnt winning in the game. You just do the content enjoy it, collect cosmetics and achievements and thats about it.

I think if Arena Net had either followed GW1 style or gameplay, chased a PVP based game, or even did the WOW PVE endgame chase...this game would be far more populated. And it is populated, just....well its the most likely of the surviving MMORPGS from the MMO golden age that will die, NC soft and all.
Only thing I want to say is they removed that "endgame chase" on purpose to differentiate itself from other MMOs on the market like WoW.

It's horizontal progression instead of vertical. The big thing that comes to mind is legendary gear. And I'm glad they did. It fills in a gap for people that don't like vertical progression. It has it's benefits for sure. But I don't prefer it.

Also, it's a free to play game but is incredibly expensive to keep yourself interested. The price of everything you buy with gems is massively expensive. You can easily spend £100 worth of gems and see very little for it. I know you can grind for gold but that get's more difficult every month as things become worthless.
And don't bother with Black Lion chest keys. I opened 10 and got the same junk in each one. Most of it I destroyed.
Don't get me wrong GW2 is a amazing mmo, but it is the most expensive to enjoy to it's full.

While I won't argue about the pricing, it's worth mentioning that unlike most other (MMO)RPGs, gold is fairly useless in GW2 after a while of playing. Once you have the crafting disciplines leveled, there's not much to do with it. It only serves as a way of bypassing gathering/timegates or to buy runes/sigils but those ain't all too expensive nor you need too many of them. No matter what you do in the game, you end up getting more and more gold on a daily basis. The speed with which you get it is the only thing that changes.

Black Lion Chests have the same trash rates as any other lootbox in any other game. Massive waste of gold or money to buy keys for them but many do buy them regardless.

I don't really have any experience with other MMORPGs. Not with any of the other popular ones. So I can't for sure agree or not. But that's definitely somewhat true to be fair. The main uses for gold end up being materials on the TP, or the gems conversion.

Also Black Lion chests really do have terrible rates I don't understand why people buy the keys lol.

Haha! Believe me I didn't buy any of those rip-off keys. They were drops from LW etc:
One, like you say, a waste of money. Two, we shouldn't encourage the loot-box principle.

On a side note, I do remember a time when BLC held amazing stuff. Now it's just throw away nonsense. You don't even get any good dyes, just parts of dyes you have to collect 5 of before you get the actual dye. They are a massive money grab.

They are going more and more into the content hid behind a pay wall. This is what will finally put the game in it's grave.

I don't think it'll get that bad. Living World Seasons continue to be free if you log-in, or pay for if not. Expansions are priced well, HoT free with Path of Fire. I mean they haven't hid content behind paywalls besides the expansions and maybe LW seasons if you don't log in. Otherwise it's just cosmetic and convenience items. Which don't get me wrong, both can get very pricey. Like a set of permanent gathering tools. Or a skin for your mount? $30 and $12.50 each (I could be wrong but that's the numbers I remember). And BL chests are such a rip-off, they really should give better odds in them. Would even maybe help sell keys on the gem store.

I do like the rework they gave with them giving statuettes. So at least you can guarantee yourself a skin or whatever else if you collect enough. Still bad but it'd better then just getting zilch over 10 or something.

For vets not so bad. But just imagine being a new player. You have to pay to get gliders, then again for mounts. I find the LW story's junk but locked behind them are maps rich with resources, mastery and hero points all locked behind a pay wall.
Before you know it that free to play game has cost you over a hundred pounds and your not finished there. More bag and bank space etc:

Ok. But the expansions also really shouldn't be free. They're chalk full of content. And to buy the living world seasons complete bundles, it's $16 for LW Season 2. And then $12 for Season 3,4, and Icebrood Saga each. So $52 total. They go on sale often for 30% each march and anniversary sale. So $36.4. The expansions also go on sale. Or I should say Path of Fire will, since technically you get Heart of Thorns for free. From $30 to $15. So wraps up to $50 for all the content in the game and all the story in the game up to this point. This will increase with End of Dragons but that will bring it's own wealth of content.

Still lower then a full-priced AAA game. And you get a whole lot more then you often do for it. I DO wish they offered a "super-bundle" of all the Living World seasons, on a larger discount then they are on the gem store in their individual bundles. But otherwise it really isn't that bad. They make content, you pay up for it. It costs money to make those maps and voice act for the story.

I agree. The expansions are well worth the money. It's just that a good deal of the content is hid behind not only the expansions but also the LW seasons. So it's a little slight of hand to say it's free to play.
Also can you imagine having to stick with the bags slots and bank tabs that you start with? It would be murder. :)
My advice is simple. Play what you can, it's free. You like it then throw some money at it. You don't like it then you haven't lost anything but the time spent playing.

I love the game and play it every spare hour regardless of it's problems. I have also spent a fortune on gems over the years and for me it was worth every penny I just want new players to know the truth of what they are getting into.

I've managed to not buy more bag slots. It's pretty managable. Though I do think I will soon. However, your bank is indeed extremely limited. Ya need to buy at like 3 tabs for sure lol. I have like 5 or 6 since I'm such a hoarder.

And yea. A lot of the game is free. But a whole lot more you're going to be coughing up cash for. Between actual content in the expansions and living world season, and the gem store items.

1-80 open world is fine with the limited bags and bank. There isn't much to collect yet. It's just regularly selling the junk you collect. And the horribleness of manually looting monsters that most of us have forgotten.
Tiberius 2021 年 5 月 2 日 上午 10:30
Gw2 has aoe looting. It's still much easier to loot plenty of items in gw2 than any other mmo.

Imo, bag slots are not really a problem, until you start doing LW story quest. Thats when quest items begun to litter up my bag and bank really quick.

It gets much worse when you wanna craft legendaries and that stupid dragon mount

Great game, don't buy it on steam
Anet is using steam as glorified adspace.

I'd say it's slightly p2w, but only if you don't buy the xpacs which are dirt cheap and offer years of content.
If you own all the products (base game, xpacs and living world content) the game is fair for all.

Not being out is an obvious one. But every month you spend without an account and signing in, is another living season episode you will have to buy for gems instead of getting it for free. Waiting for the steam release is like waiting for the game to reach it's maximum price and minimum population. And you can bet money that Anet won't bother with the steam release until they desperately need more players.
