Every single attack misses
I have just started as a soldier. Every single one of my attacks miss. Is there a stat I need to level up to actually hit stuff?

There are several different weapon skills. I guess you probably use a weapon for which you have no skill at whatsoever.

I'm using the starter greatsword that my soldier has, it should be hitting at least sometimes.

Are you using the stock character or did you go into the advanced settings and move your points around? You'd have to really dig into the DARK EYE rules that the game is based on to see what all makes up your AT score but if you really played around with the points you might have thrown something off. If you did change them what are they at now? STR, DEX etc....?

Some things to look at; How many points do you have in 2H weapons? The more the better. What is the AT / PA setting at over to the right of the 2H weapons?

Hitting a target is determined by you AT (attack) score vs the targets PA (parry) score. To increase your chance of hitting you need to increase the points you've put into your chosen weapon (basically how well you can use it) and make sure the AT / PA setting at the end of that line is weighted to the AT side, the higher it is the better your chance to hit the target, but raising it means lowering the parry rating which means the better HE has of hitting you too.

I generally don't change mine from the default settings and if I do I only raise the AT setting by 1 to increase my chance to hit without totally leaving my self defenseless.

I left all of them as the standard on the soldier class. I put a few points into 2 handed and I'm hitting more now, however lockpicking doesn't work. I can't upgrade the skill, it doesn't even have a number.

I put the hair pins in my hotbar but can't click them. I am able to heal the same way using bandages though.

I just loaded up and looked at a stock soldier; 6 points in 2H weapons with AT/PA at 11/11 so right at the start you should have been doing better so all I can say is you probably had a run of bad dice. It happens.

Lockpicking; Easy answer is YOU CAN'T. You're a fighter, not a rogue. If across from a skill / talent is ' - ' that means you can't do it. Can learn it later maybe if the option presents itself, but for now Nope! Don't remember as I wasn't looking but you probably have ' - ' across from plants, maybe animals etc.... No one character can do everything. The game concept is very much based on early RPG's, you need a balanced party, which you'll get as the game goes on.

Can't pick locks or pockets with your fighter? Wait til you get a thief in the group. Can't heal? Wait til you get a medic in the group etc....

You can heal because you have a starting number in the heal talent as a soldier would; battlefield medicine and all that.

I don't know if you have any experience with pen & paper D&D, but if you do you need to start thinking in those terms and you'll find the game mechanic's will fall into place.

I haven't got any experience with D&D, and I haven't really played an RPG game this advanced. I restarted as a burglar last night and I seem to be getting on better than I did as a soldier. Thanks very much for the help.

Ahhh in that case this might be of use to you:

http://www.gamebanshee.com/drakensangthedarkeye/walkthrough/overview-1-avestrue.php

It's a lot more than just a walkthough as it has sections on your companions, combat, items you'll find etc..... Since none of the quest givers are marked, I found it useful to make sure I've done all the quests in an area prior to leaving.

Reading the game manual would be good too.

It is one of the more advanced one's. It seems the Germans after seeing D&D decided that it was 'nice', but they could really jazz it up and make it very nit picky. You have ALOT of control over your character and the companions you'll get.

One thing to remember just because you pick X class, doesn't mean that's all they can do. How you spend the leveling points you get is up to you so while your burglar is kind of a weak fighter right now, nothing says that farther along he can't be a 2H sword swinging monster.

When in doubt, ask questions.

And make sure you're saying ALOT like prior to leaving an area to move to another etc... etc.... etc.... The mantra here is save, save again and then save one more time.

There is an in game bug that can corrupt your main save file the longer you play, usually happens towards chapter 8 or so, but it's best to get into the habit now.

As far as changing from a soldier to a burglar. I've played through the entire game already, but currently have 3 'test' characters running around the starter area looking at different classes / builds. Play around at the start and see what you're comfortable with.

I don't remember the rules very clearly, but I think it's your stats actually are what affects whether you hit, the weapon skills only help if they're higher than the opponent's. It's not just one stat either but the average of 3 I think. Courage, str/dex and something, check the manual. Strength also affects damage so it's best to put points into that first but you need to raise all 3 to hit properly. You can train lockpicking somewhere too, but it's a waste of points on a fighter. You get several characters so I don't know why you want to put all the skills on one guy...

There are multiple reasons why this can happen. I just guessed one of them. But it could also have been wounds or poison. Theoretically it could also be encumberance.

It's best to check the manual but I was thinking about this and from what I remember the system works like this: You roll Courage, Agility and Strength (Dex for ranged) and you have to succeed at all three to hit. Weapon skill gives you extra dice to roll if it's higher than the opponent's. When I was playing this the first time I had no idea about the system and just slapped everything into Strength and weapon skill. That's not enough since you're going to fail the other 2 rolls if your score in them sucks. This is just from memory so it's probably not 100% accurate, but it's something like that...
