- Trauma from the experiences he went through.

- Balance (there are a few areas surrounded by water which require an upgraded bike to access via jumps).
The carrying stuff is not really valid imo since it's not realistic that he could carry all that stuff to begin with.
Jumps could be done in other ways so balancing I don't think is a good reason either.
But yeah, probably it was an easy way to cut off areas to enforce using the trails.
Trauma... I could buy that I suppose. Wish they would make it a bit more clear from the beginning in that case.
