I do think that entire encumbrance system be literally same as in Rouge Legacy 1 not putting some number limits or similar on stuff you can carry.
Rouge Legacy games should be fast ones not ones where we need to take time on setting up inventory.
for anyone else wondering, I checked their twitter about the text color: Red text are game system updates. Black text is content updates.
Quick overview of the problem with Weight in Rogue Legacy 1, and what Encumbrance does for RL2.
RL1's Gear and Weight issue.
1. Weight is the BEST stat to raise in the game, as GEAR is the best thing to equip to level up.
2. Weight becomes useless as soon as you can equip the best gear in the game.
3. We can't make weight scale obnoxiously or else WEIGHT becomes the worst stat in the game (cost of weight must be less then raising the cost of a base stat, otherwise it's never useful).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RL2's Gear and Weight issue.
ISSUE
1. Gear is now EVEN BETTER due to UNITY bonuses, and the ability for gear to keep leveling up.
2. Now the issues of just pumping points into weight are exacerbated.
3. We want it to scale into late game. (Why remake the same system with the same problems?)
GOAL
1 SUPER SIMPLE. RL is not a game about gear checks, and doing complex min-maxxing.
2. LATE GAME SCALING. Weight needs to be a useful stat for longer.
3. DON'T PUNISH TOO HEAVILY. Some people will never want to bother messing with it.
That's totally fine.
4. BE FAIR. Have it affect every class equally. Or almost equally.
SOLUTION - Encumbrance system.
- If you're below 35% of your weight limit, you're LIGHT and get a big mana regen bonus.
-Below 70% you're MEDIUM and no bonuses
- Everything else is HEAVY and you get a negative mana regen bonus.
- We redesigned the Blacksmith UI to help showcase this as easily as possible.
1. It scales really well into the late game. If you're a completionist, and you really want the best character possible, you'll need to stay want to be an absolute BEAST, then you'll need to stay LIGHT. Staying light means you're gonna need a huge MAX WEIGHT STAT.
2. Worrying about weight isn't a huge deal breaker, as most casual players will probably be in the medium range 90% of the time, and it's quite easy to drop into the Medium weight limit by dropping 1 piece of gear.
3. We redid how mana regens (way more frequent, lower mana cap), so the effects of having reduced mana are more significant, without ruining the RL experience. In fact, being at HEAVY weight is more akin to playing RL1 since mana regen on hit is quite low, (and mana regen on hit didn't exist in RL1).
I hope this helps cover up anyone's issues about Encumbrance ruining the game. RL isn't a number crunching game, and we really don't want this game to become one. These changes take a lot of time because we wanted to keep it easy to understand, and hopefully when it arrives, you guys like it.
But we can not judge it and to be fair we did not even try it yet...
Also main reason for this post is to commend RL dev who took time to explain community how they plan on doing encumbrance system......... so take your time guys. But make good game.
Take care, stay safe and take your time, first one was amazing and early access is great to build even a better game this time around, I'll be waiting patiently <3
