Lost ALL progress after update - please help
So I just defeated the bosses in the the Sygian Study, and on that particular run I had a hiccupy audio bug going on that I had not witness. There was no game lag that I had perceived but the audio every few seconds felt like lag (if that makes sense). So I was going to restart my game after the run. I was playing on a steam deck. I got the item that gives you 30% more of your gold for an instant death, giving me over 10k gold. Then I quit game through the menus, rather than just through the deck. All of a sudden it downloads an update, I get back in the game and my save file is gone! I started a new game for a few seconds to confirm that my nightmare has been realized.l

I have the game installed on my PC as well as my deck. Checking my PC, it says steam cloud version out of date. Is it possible I can obtain a somewhat up to date save file locally on my pc (as long as I don't update the cloud version from my deck). I never play this game on my desktop but I suppose that's a possibility?

Very frustrating. I am off put by the idea of starting all over again just because the game updated. Might just not play it if I can't get this fixed.

And the location for Linux seems to be ".config/unity3d/Cellar Door Games/Rogue Legacy 2/Saves".

You the GOAT - I was just sitting down to start googling all this and here it is waiting for me. :cozybethesda:

So i went into:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1253920/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/Cellar Door Games/Rogue Legacy 2/Saves/Steam/76561197993652758
... and found several ProfileX folders - since I was saving to the first save slot, I checked the Profile0 folder and it had a bunch of stuff in it - so far so good.

I then opened:
/home/deck/.config/unity3d/Cellar Door Games/Rogue Legacy 2/Saves/Steam/76561197993652758
... and found the same directory structure/hierarchy. I simply copied my Profile0 folder from the first location into the second location, fired the game up, annnnnnd....

Everything's restored!

I should add that that last directory (in both locations) that's a string of numbers is your steam user ID number, so the one in the example will be different from yours. Unless you have multiple Steam users logging into Steam on your device, there should only be one directory of that kind.

Wrote this up for anyone who runs into this issue, good luck and happy dungeon crawling!

EDIT: This is definitely something Valve/Steam Support should probably know about. I was in the middle of a ~250MB download/update for this title when I went to play it this morning so I let it finish before I discovered my saves were wiped out. Either I didn't pick up the patch from last week or something else is wonky.

Hi! Facing the same issue with my save! I'm thinking it may have something to do with the fact a native linux version now exists, maybe the folder id have changed? Anyway, I'm taking action, I will install the game on my pc, boot it and see if the save is intact there. If I find a solution, I will post here.

Test completed! I booted the game on PC, and my save data is lost there as well. Still, I found the "backup save data" in the main menu and I do see saves there. Still, I'd loose 1 week of progress if I used one of those, so will try to find an alternate way to resolve this issue.

Same issue, here. All progress gone on Steam Deck, nothing shows up in the backup saves, and I installed the game on my desktop to see if there was at least a steam cloud save (which there should have been) and there's nothing there, either (neither in the save slots nor in the backup saves). 58 hours down the toilet, I guess.

I'm on a PC running Windows and my save seems to be fine. I also don't recall a recent update, but I might just be forgetting it.

Your problem is probably something to do with either the Steam Deck or Linux.

You're very likely right. I haven't had the time to dig around in desktop mode yet, but Super_Sayen067 mentioned there was a Linux native version released which may have changed the location of the save folder - just need to figure out where the windows/proton version keeps the saves vs. Linux and hopefully it'll be as simple as moving the save file over to a different location.

I definitely caught a patch this morning - it was mid-download when I went to boot the game up.

File a support issue with Valve - the game hasn't changed since the 1.1.1 update last week, the only change made was an updated Deck Verified result for the latest build. Any data losses will be on the SteamOS side rather than the application, since Steam Cloud handles the transfer of save files between versions (and all saves are cross-compatible between Linux/macOS/Windows).
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Excellent, thanks so much for this writeup - so yeah, that about confirms it: Steam Cloud is not validating the saves when updating the version installed on the system (which it also doesn't explain when updating the software behind your back... can't say I'm thrilled about that user experience at all). If anyone experiences this, absolutely file a support ticket with Steam, this is a potential data loss bug which they should definitely care about!

No sweat, I was frankly slightly devastated to have lost nearly 60 hours of gameplay. I've filed a support request with Steam Support and linked back to this discussion thread.

Thanks so much - I am absolutely LOVING RL2!

Thank you! You are a life saver! I thought I lost 178 hours of playtime!

Happened to me too :(

Does anyone have a writeup for how to recover my data? I was playing offline for a week and lost all of my progress when I reconnected to wifi and downloaded the update. steam deck user here so any easy fixes not requiring going into a PC would be much appreciated

You have two options.  You can either revert back to the Proton build, or copy the save files from the Proton save folder to the native version manually.  IMPORTANT: Before attempting any of these steps, please disable Steam cloud saving to avoid permanently losing any progress on your Proton version.  Once you recover your saves and play a bit, it should be safe to re-enable cloud saving.

You can force run the Proton version by navigating to the game's properties on Steam, going to 'Compatibility', enabling the 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play Compatibility tool' checkmark, and choosing the latest version of Proton from the drop down.

Alternatively, you can copy the save files from Proton to the native version manually. If you're willing to go through it, I recommend connecting a keyboard/mouse to your Steam Deck if possible.  Here are the full steps:

  1. Navigate to the Power option in the Steam menu, and restart in Desktop Mode (don't worry, it's very simple to get back to Big Picture mode).
  2. Once Desktop Mode has loaded, touch the folder icon next to the Firefox browser icon in the bottom left corner.  This will bring up the Dolphin folder explorer.
  3. First thing you need to do is touch the three horizontal line icon in the top-right corner to bring up the folder properties, and then checkmark "Show Hidden Files".
  4. Once hidden files are visible, you can navigate to the save directory by starting in Home (shortcut to home is under Places on the left-hand side of Dolphin).
  5. Copy the save folder at: Home/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1253920/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/appdata/locallow/Cellar Door Games/Rogue Legacy 2/Saves/Steam/<STEAMID>/
  6. Paste those saves to: Home/.local/.config/Unity3D/Cellar Door Games/Rogue Legacy 2/Saves/Steam/<STEAMID>/
  7. To get back to Gaming Mode, simply touch the "Return to Gaming Mode" icon on the desktop.  From there, the save files should be available after launching the game.

*Note that sometimes the Dolphin explorer becomes unresponsive. To fix this, close the folder window and click the folder icon at the bottom again.  It will keep track of the last folder you opened.

Thank you so much for the reply. Unfortunately neither method worked for me. Do I need to delete the old save data perhaps before pasting the folder at step 5 into the folder at step 6? Or do I need to remove any files specifically rather than pasting the entire folder? I took the entire folder with my STEAMID in step 5 and put it into the folder with my STEAMID in step 6.

Any help appreciated!
