Starting a server
I'm doing what I can to play with my friends on a map I've chossen, but each time I try, the game, I dunno. shuts down and some box popls up. Loads of code goes past, and it never stops. This might be the server, I wouldn't know. Is it, and if so, how do I play on it? That's all I'm trying to do.

to be able to play on your own server with the same computer you play with then choose a listen servers and not a dedicated one , you will also have to mind that hosting a game yourself will get your friend a high ping unless they live close to you.

huh. so besides fear of lag, I have to make sure it's not dedicated?
yes , thru they won't see much lag if they live in the same city or same Region ...

I would just suggest to use a password if you know how how so that peoples from other countries will not join in by mistake and find themselve in a unplayable game.

most Internet providers does not offer a 'upload' speed which is fast enough to properly host a game over long distances.

I tried in killing floor and a few other game. from Canada to Europe on a listen servers the one who connect to the other get a minimum of 150 in ping and it's goes up to 250 easily ... making the game much harder to play.

perhaps so, but Killing floor seems to run on a less trying graphics load, so I've been able to play with people from Russia, England, New England, and Ireland at the same tie without a problem. If that's not how I got through those games without lag, I have No idea

It's because peoples running the well known Dedicated servers pay much more for their Internet access and have better bandwith then the Regular users .. they're proffesional made servers , It's nothing related to graphics or how fast your computer is really.

There's nothing wrong with hosting a dedicated server yourself as long as you can handle it. In fact, I'd recommend it over a local server because then they don't depend on each other. A crash in one won't ruin the other.

but once this other box opens, the one filled with code. How do I get on the server? Steam on't let me open the game as long as it's already open

even dedicated servers sometime crash ... and beside I recomended a listen server because it's much easier to set up for someone only looking to play once in a while with a few friends.

dedicated servers are usually meant to be ran on a computer that is not playing the game itself by default. I would only recomend a dedicated server if you have a second computer available which is not currently being used for anything.

How exactly are you hosting it right now? If you did it right, you should be able to start the server, open Killing Floor and join either locally (via the LAN tab) or via your external IP address.

I also searched from google and most website I found say you can't host a Dedicated and play from the same computer at the same time and I that's why the option 'Listen' is there.

The last time I did it myself was earlier today.

I tried and it does not work for me ... and personally I don't see any advantage of dedicated over Listen if your intend to play the game on the same computer anyway.

If you can't get it to work, you probably haven't set it up right.

Here's[i.imgur.com] a screenshot I took just then.

No, you get it from SteamCMD. How have you been trying to start a "dedicated" server?
