I would just suggest to use a password if you know how how so that peoples from other countries will not join in by mistake and find themselve in a unplayable game.
most Internet providers does not offer a 'upload' speed which is fast enough to properly host a game over long distances.
I tried in killing floor and a few other game. from Canada to Europe on a listen servers the one who connect to the other get a minimum of 150 in ping and it's goes up to 250 easily ... making the game much harder to play.
dedicated servers are usually meant to be ran on a computer that is not playing the game itself by default. I would only recomend a dedicated server if you have a second computer available which is not currently being used for anything.
