Generally curved do less poise damage but are much faster. Generally they do slashing damage instead of regular... Which works better on fleshy enemies and less on armored enemies.

Curved great swords are weapons of elegance and skill.
greatswords are semi-sharpened metal bars barely dustinguishable from hammers in their application.

also curved swords cause bleed.
but yeah, mainly moveset and for some attacks damage type : D

gathered few more, they do seem to follow this trend versus normal GS. I bet they're exceptions to this but the key is to look how scales with str, ie if really get a bonus from two handing it or not

There is a great(heavy) thrusting sword in game too you'd imagine would benefit from str but as a primarily dex weapon actually better off one handing it.

This basically, also the hitbox range tends to be shorter on Curved Greatswords.

yes seems like most thrusting weapons are relegated to dex duty. the war pick was an exception but i think it does strike in this game.

many greatswords also have piercing thrust attacks but im not smart enough to make use of physical damage types in this game except when something obviously needs to be hit with a hammer.

Curved weapons usually come with higher dexterity scaling/requirements, and have less emphasis on strength than other weapons within the same weight bracket. Often they will have quicker or longer combos, making it more difficult for an enemy to sneak in a hit safely.

Unlike straight swords they generally lack a reliable thrusting attack in their moveset, making their reach slightly more limited.
They also have less guard-breaking potential per hit, which is usually compensated some other way such as the faster attacks or an auxiliary effect such as bleed.
If they do not have something like bleed it means pretty much all of their physical damage will be slashing damage, which sucks against armoured/shielding opponents but probably not enough to swap to a lower level weapon.

Generally speaking you should always have at least two weapons with different types of damage in these games but you can sort of get around that with weapon buffs.

Still having at least one ranged weapon or spell makes the game much easier.

As do big shields and thrusting swords... There is no reason ever to be purely melee or ranged unless you want to gimp yourself for extra challenge.
