ULTRAKILL

Graphics?
Game videos look fun, reviews are solid, my style... But those graphics. Do you get past it? Like brutal brutal polygons, worse than the 90s. Im not asking for 4k cyberpunk photo realism ray tracing here... Just maybe like 10 extra polygons. Is it worth looking past the BRUTAL graphics?

Yes. One of Ultrakill's strengths, in my mind, is the visual design - it emphasises clarity and readability over intricacy and baroqueness, and when the gameplay is so dependent on your ability to read your surroundings, this is for the best. (And, uh, plus it'll run on just about anything...)

The graphics are PS1 style. Try the demo and see if you enjoy it. Become a cultured individual. Become ONE OF US.

Okay well thanks for the feedback, it seems you all can look past the graphics for the underlying gameplay. So would you genuinely say you do not desire even slightly better graphics at any point while playing? The total "PS1 style" is fully acceptable to you guys while playing? I feel like they could have aimed for PS2 at least and still pulled this game off, no?

Im already a fan of this genre, for example I like Prodeus and Ion Fury. I played the hell out of DOOM, Duke Nukem, and Wolf as a kid.

I just feel like this looks worse than those. Am I just crazy? Or is it that bad lol?

It looks great to me. It's going for a clear style and it succeeds well at it. The graphics are low poly and have that nice crunchy feel to them that's hard to describe but satisfying to witness in action. There's enough detail for everything to look nice while keeping it clean and easy to read. There's also plenty of variety with each different section of the game completely switching up the visual style.

My sense is that while Dusk or Ion Fury or other games of that stripe aim for a sort of mid-late-90s PC game style, Ultrakill's visuals are actually a lot smoother by comparison. Like I said before, I think the visuals here are in service of the gameplay first and foremost, and the visual design accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. If anything, the game's application of a specific sort of color palette reminds me at times of Mega Drive games.

If you're talking about Doom 2016, though, I have a bit of food for thought: granted that new Doom is a visually complex game compared to this, but think about the way Doom 2016 highlights - literally highlights in glowing colors - things in the environment: pickups, items, objectives, low-health enemies. None of that highlighting is necessary with a game that aims for a comparatively spartan visual style. The visuals might not be to everyone's liking for whatever reason, but I think there are some significant advantages to this style, performance aside.

the visuals fit the game, anything more detailed would take away from the experience

Honest answer here. When i first played the game, the graphics hurt my eyes really bad and it took a few hours to get used to it.

But you get used to it, and the game its self is very good and one of my favorites. I still play the game even after +300 hours.

I turned all the PS1 crap off. But I still have problems. Too many flashes and distracting affects that make my eyes lose visual acquisition on everything

To be honest here, i turned some of the features off (or rather turned some on?). For example the texture/polygon jitters are just not my thing.

Not saying others are wrong for liking it, just that i like to shut it off and crank up some of the other settings.

Graphical quality is one of those things it would always be cool to have more of, but never makes or breaks a game.

the graphics are fine but watch out, this game contains scenes
