So your GTA IV won't work... Here's why. (PATCH 1.0.8.0 EXPLAINED)
Hey.

So this thread is based on the fact that loads of old GTA IV players cannot start the game ever since the new update that came out on November 30th, 2016.

This is because you most likely have "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.dll" or "dsound.dll" in your GTA IV directory, in order to run the ASI scripts you've installed (Simple Native Trainer, LCPDFR, ELS, etc)

The solution is simple. Verify the game cache of GTA IV through your steam library. Then go into your GTA IV directory, and delete any of the following files and/or folders.

"dsound.dll"
"-x-l-i-v-e-l-e-s-.dll"
"ALL INI FILES.ini"
"ALL ASI FILES.asi"
"AdvancedHook.log"
"AdvancedHook.dll"
"asilog.txt"
Folder ELS
Folder LCPDFR
"LCPDFR.log"
"LCPDFR_Useage.dat"
"ScriptHook.dll"
"ScriptHook.log"
"ScriptHookDotNet.log"

After this, you should be ablte to start GTA IV, pless the Play on the new Rockstar login menu and hop into the game, no problems what so ever. Enjoy and read below for why you can't use any mods for a few days or even weeks.

--

To understand this issue, you must first understand that GTA IV hasn't had an update since May 10th, 2010. That's over 6 years without an update, hence the entire Rockstar Social Club login issues, and the fact that multiplayer has practically been dead because not a lot of people figured out that having car mods, scripts, and etc still allows you to create freemode but only those with the same car mods, and scripts can join hence not a lot of people are compatible unless you've the vanilla GTA IV without mods, or just the Simple Native Trainer and/or LCPDFR.

For these reasons, the GTA IV community has been seen as inactive for some time and it is common for GTA IV players to play the game for either story mode, or mods. However, just a week ago, GTA IV was fully updated, thus leaving ASI loaders (-x-l-i-v-e-l-e-s-, and dsound) and the ScriptHook files that you need to run any mods COMPLETELY USELESS until said ASI loaders and ScriptHook files are updated for the 1.0.8.0 patch.

However, due to the recent sale on Rockstar games and plus the update that made multiplayer easy as pie... The multiplayer is finally alive and well so instead of trying to make these modifications work, take a few days off and enjoy playing the classic, vanilla GTA IV.

My name is Craazy and I'm a GTA IV extremist.

EDIT:

An ASI loader file titled -x-l-i-v-e-l-e-s-.dll was censored for some reason. This file needs to be deleted if found, it is a file that allows mods for patch 1.0.7.0 (old patch) and disables GFWL.

After this update I can't re-download the game at all, it says "Error Content File Locked". I don't even know what that means.

I'm having the same problem

I was able to fix my problem by scaning the drive for errors (I use a portable hard drive for Steam.)

What about playing Online? It will be possible for those who bought the game after GFWL closement and stuff?

GFWL should still work (minus some features) if you install the most rescent one they posted. I was able to get Fallout 3 and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City to play.

There is no reason for Rockstar to care about the online state of a game this old especially with their newest release even being old so quit being an apologist for this BS of screwing up customers old modded games. This is an unacceptable abuse of power and all it has done is piss off and alienate their old customers from becoming new customers this holiday season. I for one was planning to buy GTA V during the Christmas sale but now they lost my trust, my respect and a new game sale. Luckily they did this now before I made the mistake of buying another one of their products. Are the rest of my archaic Rockstar products safe or are they going to screw those up also for some demented justified [corporate] benefit? This is the very reason people fear and dislike online game delivery because even the SINGLEPLAYER customers aren't safe. The saddest thing is there isn't even any real improvement made that makes this even remotely palatable or beneficial to the customer. I'm done with Rotstar products if this is their corporate culture now.:steamsalty:

Follow the instructions in my post, it should fix the issue. If not, seek help from a therapist.

Actually, you'd be surprised about why Rockstar DOES care about this game. First off, modifications for GTA IV were never supposed to happen but due to the lack of updating the game ever since Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, and other Rockstar games were released... modifications became more and more popular to the point that everyone knew GTA IV PC for it's mods.

However, here we are, 6 years after GTA IV's last PC update and we got a new one, thus causing around 80-85% of modifications based on ASI and ScriptHook to stop working. Why did Rockstar decide to finally update the game and do this? Rockstar already knows within the next few months, the game would go back to it's state of "filled with ♥♥♥♥ tons of mods" but now, with a full bug-proof multiplayer, thus reviving the GTA IV multiplayer. And why would they do such a thing? Well, of course, in 2018, it will be the tenth anniversary for GTA IV and what does Rockstar do to the GTA games when it turns 10 years old? They remaster the game and due to the whole "GTA 4 better than GTA 5" and "GTA 5 better than GTA 4" arguments, about 50% of the community belives that GTA IV remastered will in fact be better than GTA V. And that's why GTA IV was updated.

But then again, they are updating GTA V like every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ two weeks so maybe Rockstar hasn't given up on it yet.

I don't have any of these files. The only file I remember ever touching is paul.dll to get rid of GFWL. I have 3 dll files with "paul" in it (two of them appended with disabled), but verification says 4 files need to be reacquired. The problem is that after verification, it does NOT reacquire those 4 files, nor does it specify which files they are. I have the 39MB update stuck in the downloads page saying CONTENT FILE LOCKED for weeks now.

Okay, try going into your GTA IV directory and delete every paul file you see. After this, delete two folders called Activation and Manuals. Following this, go into your steam library, right click on GTA IV, properties, local files, and verify game cache. Wait for Steam to do it's thing and leave your computer completely for 10 minutes, if you don't interfere some how, then Steam should be able to identify two folders and paul files missing, and re-install them after it tells you some items need to be re-quired. Some files in GTA IV don't reinstall after you verify but because you've deleted vital files and two useless folders, it somehow verifies, (reaquire etc), and reinstalls EVERYTHING.

After this, you should be able to play GTA IV, no problems at all. If not, I don't know what else to tell you... maybe reinstall? The new patch made the game better for my entire friends list (the friends who have GTA IV of course) and it made the game bug-free for a lot of others as well. I wish you good luck.

So is there a way to revert back to 1.0.7.0 so I can play my mods?
Never mind I found the old EXE and all the associated files that came along with it backed up, replaced the ones in my steam folder and also backed up the ones that come with the game (so I can actually use 1.0.8.0 once modders and scripters update their works for this patch). I'm going to upload them and make a post about acquring the original 1.0.7.0 files if you need them.
