Animal companions not working properly (it seems)

Hi, in my game I have two people with companions
1. a Divine Hound with a dog
2. a Paladin with a horse

Both animal companions have only 1 hp and always die with the first hit they receive
Also neither animal appears in my character list so I cannot upgrade them in any way, can not give equipment (barding) or even check on their status other than still standing or dead and lying down.

I have no mods installed, not even a mod manager or anything. I have read that the 1 hp problem can sometimes result from individual difficulty setting which I had used but have now reverted to standard setting without resolving my issue.

Any advice?

i assume you haven't leveled them up. your cahracter shoudl icon should have little bar on bottom of it, click it to get pets icon visible and level

Try start l over with standard settings instead of reverting. You can always beef up the difficulties afterwards

this is right.... bottom of character portrait is the icon with the pets.... you can click on it in the character menu or outside of character menu to pop them out next to the one with the pet.... and there is a part of the pets portrait that can shrink it back down to the characters portrait.... its a quality of life thing for when you end up having like you and 5 other ppl and pets galore

If it makes you feel better, the first playthrough I did, I didn't realize this until I reached the maze and was really confused why the animals sucked so much c':

Don't forget to give them equipment, too!

I also didn't realize how to find their sheets before level 4 or so ...
