Despite that though, I still desperately want to see proximity text chat added to this game. Everyone on the PC has access to a keyboard, and everyone can type. In games like GTA Online I can join a group of rando’s in a co-op mission and have zero problems chatting with them. Everyone uses text chat. In RDO, it’s exceedingly rare to find someone using voice chat. Communication is Red Dead Online is absolutely awful.
I get most of my enjoyment in online games by interacting with the players I meet/‘bump into.’ Being able to actually socialize with them is a HUGE reason why I play multiplayer games. @_@
So I’ve stopped playing RDO. This game clearly isn’t designed for someone like me. :P
If proximity text chat ever gets added I’ll gladly come back.
If another intuitive solution is introduced that lets players communicate, I’ll gladly come back.
But until then, Red Dead Online feels incredibly isolating and lonely; and I don’t play multiplayer games to feel lonely. :/
I've heard this before and I am not doubting you but I've played for 500 hours and had 2 instances of people being stupid. Other than that I've only ever even heard aboutb4 or 5 people speak one word.
My basic issue is you play a online game but hate the online gaming crowd.
Just don't play online games seems to be the simple solution rather than making companies change everything to suit your play style.
Again I'm not trying to be an ass but I've played online games for 25 years and just don't understand people who obviously hate interacting with people not on their terms affecting the rest of us.
I just want to play a online game with other online gamers. Why is that so hard in an online game?
I feel exactly like you. If you ever play again add me as a friend if you want and we can play and communicate all day long. Happy trails and good luck to you my friend.
After that if people get along they can use the tools allowed to meet on discord or whatever.
I met a fun possie here and now we use discord and open chat.
The biggest problem is people playing a mmo that refuses to talk.
Why play a mmo if you hate talking.
it doesn't take more than a few people being stupid to ruin the experience of a game. that's why it is a good idea to have text chat to find like minded people without getting bothered by a few morons and play with them using voice chat like discord. the global chat in most online games sucks. i didn't mean RDO alone. in CSGO for example are 1 or 2 players enough if they constantly scream or sing or blast music through their mic. that's why i muted the voice chat in that game as well. maybe you are lucky not to meet as many annoying players but i only muted the voice chat after encountering them fairly frequently. mostly guys from eastern europe judging by their accents. so be happy that you don't have these problems but i do. as i said, text chat would help find players you can add to your friends list and can then use voice chat with but block out all the rest. where do you see a problem using text chat in this way? ideally there should be the option not to display text chat on screen if you don't use it, just like you can mute voice chat.
Sorry. I didn't articulate what I meant very well. Lemmie try that again! XD
What modification to Red Dead Online could the developers at Rockstar make that would improve the communication between players? The current system clearly isn't working because hardly anyone socializes online.
I believe that adding Proximity Text Chat to RDO is the single-best-thing the devs could do to improve player communication. (Well, on PC anyways.)
However, I'd love to hear what other ideas people have. :)
In fact, if you have a really strong idea, please share your thoughts with Rockstar on their Official RDO Feedback Site:

Back in December 13, 2019, Rockstar said in their Newswire:

With the launch of Red Dead Online for PC bringing a whole new audience of players to the game, we encourage you to please contribute your input to rockstargames.com/reddeadonline/feedback to let us know your opinions of what you think could be changed, added or removed to improve the Red Dead Online experience.

To date, I'm not aware of ANY changes from RDO on Console vs PC except for prettier graphics and keyboard control support. I can't help but think text chat would be an incredible addition for the PC audience. :/
Unfortunately it won't be used in that way any more than voice chat is though. And people will still harras and name call and spam racist slurs all day. Probably more so since they won't have to speak but just type.
The problem isn't text vs voice , the problem is people. I played a hard-core military Sim for a long time that required real time voice communication in order to win but over time newer players where all " fill in the blank reason" incapable of using voice chat and they became so many that the game was becoming unplayable. They would flood the forums with requests for text chat and that would fix everything. Which if course it wouldn't because who has time to read a wall of text in a battle.
Well they eventually added text chat and after that every game the side of the screen was just nonstop fighting amongst people all day every day and those people STILL never communicated with the people around them. They just spammed racist or sexist or homophobic slurs for 2 hours at a time.
That's why I don't think text chat will fix anything.
I still would like it for the reason you said to meet people to play with but voice could already do that if people just used it.
However...we should only be able to publicly chat to people that are visible on our radar. that would stop the massive spamming issues that global text chat brings.
That's why I keep specifying I want Proximity-Text-Chat in RDO. I think Global-Text-Chat would be a nightmare because it would just get flooded with toxic spam. @_@
The ONE exception to this rule would be if your in a posse or on a co-op mission. Then I think the text chat should be global among everyone in your group. (I'm pretty sure this is how the current RDO voice chat works.)
Anyway. If you want to see proximity text chat get added to the game, please share your thoughts with Rockstar on their official feedback site:

If enough people ask Rockstar for text chat it'll likely get added to the game... eventually.
I have no problem chatting with folks in GTA because of text chat.
I wish I could say the same for RDO.
