do ancient coins ever go on sale?

Not as far as I know. Some stuff in the Pirate Emporium gets discounted (reduced Ancient Coin cost) sometimes, I believe. I've never seen Ancient Coins themselves go on sale though.

You can very rarely find them for free from a silly skeleton.

Ancient coins can be found from several sources in-game (ancient skeletons very rarely, and the season pass rewards specifically) but I don't think the purchasing of them ever offers any discounts. Premium currencies generally don't go on sale when they're able to be earned in-game.

That's pretty amazing. I'm somewhere between 500 and 600 hours and have found 2 total

we did have a server alliance on fotd and apparently more ppl increases spawn rates
