Crusades question
1. First I want to know can you join a crusade late or is it only once you pledge yourself before it starts and then that's it

2. Second, can you offer to join a crusade if the main target of one is your ally? This old grandma ruler won't kick the bucket so I can get an alliance with her grandson once he takes her land...but if it were possible this would save me 500 piety in switching religions just to participate. Ofc this would only work if I can offer to join once it begins

1.4.2 is the game

Hey Jet!

You can always pledge at the beginning or wait a little... but if you wait too long you might receive a warning from your Head of Religion with options.
You can join whenever you want but it's better to give some Score to the Holy War whenever you can.
You could promise to join... join... but don't act if you don't want to :)

IIRC you can only join a Great Holy War on either side, if you have the same faith as the attacker or the defenders.

But then you would have been already prompted to join when the GHW started (or entered the preparation phase in the case of a crusade). Trying to join the ongoing war as non-believer should give you an error message as above.

Hi! Well technically I am not the asatru pagan I an eastern pagan. So I didn't get the choice. I can join them by changing religions temporarily

I think an exception is if you own land in the target of the crusade. For example the target is jorvik held by asatru. The Catholics are coming. In the south, all of Wessex territory is under my cousins control, who is also my exact eastern pagan religion yet he's involved in the crusade for the kingdom of England.

Does anyone happen to know if you can join a crusade once it began though?

Crusades / GHWs always target the entire area of a de jure kingdom, not a specific ruler.

So every realm which holds land within that kingdom, and whose ruler is regarded an infidel by the attacker, is target of that crusade.

This also drags the entire faith of each defending ruler into the war. Example if the Seljuks hold just 1 county in Jerusalem when the first crusade starts, it goes against both the Ismaili and Ashari muslim faiths.

Yep that's why wessex is defending jorvik. What religion would the Seljuk be in your example? And would both opposing Muslim states be united against it or would a crusade be possible to happen simultaneously with another one targeting the same realm

Seljuk is the big turkic empire in persia/arabia 1066, they are Ashari. The Fatimids are having the Shia Caliphate in Egypt at that time (Ismaili) and own Jerusalem by default.

And yes, everyone targeted by the crusade/ghw is automatically allied as defender. Doesn't matter if their faith has a mutually hostile stance.
I think you can try to ally one of the forces during the GHW and then join as an ally after the cooldown period is up.

Anyone else wish winning as defender would be more consequential? All you do is get some piety and prestige which doesn't amount to much. I'd have hoped for a sizable gold award like the one you get for repelling normal attacks.
