Remothered: Broken Porcelain contains, without hyperbole, one of the most obtusely designed gameplay segments I have ever experienced in a video game.

Now, most of the game's enemies attack by chasing you down until they can grab you and attempt to finish you off, but the game's second stalker, Mr. Ashmann, is different - Ashmann has a gun. This lets him continuously damage you and potentially even kill you as he closes in, forcing you to take cover or break line of sight as soon as he's on your trail.

The scene where you're introduced to Ashmann as an enemy begins by zooming in on a fire extinguisher in his office. Your character will exclaim something to the effect of "if I use that fire extinguisher, maybe I can stand a chance." This fire extinguisher can be used to spray Ashmann and stun him at close range, which is a decent enough way to get some breathing room if he gets in too close.

At this point of the game, your objective is given as "Defeat Mr. Ashmann." In the chase sequence immediately before this, the player is taught that defeating a stalker entails sneaking up on them and stabbing them with a one-use defense item, then running and hiding until the enemy's alert has lowered enough to do it again. The player has access to the entire map they've explored up to this point during their confrontation with Mr. Ashmann.

However, despite being able to scour the map for screwdrivers and spades to jam into Ashmann's back to your heart's content, doing the thing the game taught you to do in the chase immediately before this one won't work. Ashmann will never stay down, no matter how many times you ambush him, because the objective to "Defeat Mr. Ashmann" is a lie.

This is actually a scripted loss sequence, where continuing requires to to get caught by Ashmann after stunning him twice with the fire extinguisher. If he gets close enough to catch you BEFORE you've sprayed him twice, he'll just throw you to the side before continuing to shoot you to death. He'll still shoot at you as he approaches AFTER you've stunned him with the fire extinguisher, meaning that you're still at risk of being killed once you've failed in the specific way the game wants you to.

Only once you've stunned Ashmann twice and then allowed him to grab you without getting yourself riddled with gunfire will he pistol-whip you instead, allowing you to continue the game.

This is a sequence that drags itself out the longer you successfully engage the mechanics the game taught you to use to accomplish a false objective you just learned how to do the right way, and exists entirely to provide an unspoken tutorial on using the fire extinguisher.

This is the only time a fire extinguisher ever appears in the game.

I came in with such high hopes for this game. After 1 hours I was pretty much forced into submission after dealing with buggy movement, being stuck crouching, awesome camera angles and then the first enemy getting glitched into a wardrobe!

If you intend to buy this game I'd personally say leave it for a month and pray they fix this or just avoid. I've already requested a refund and don't intend on buying again.

As the highly prestigious 11th place speedrunner of Resident Evil Survivor 2 - Code: Veronica, I just have no words for whatever I just played.

Prequel and sequel

While the game mainly focuses on Jennifer's story taking place in the '70s we also get to take control of Reed who I understand was the main protagonist of the previous episode, Tormented Fathers. There is a nice recap video when starting a new game and a text-based version is also available in the menus so I didn't have an issue with playing Broken Porcelain not having tried its predecessor, at all.

Plot

This is a bit of a mess with exploring one's real identity, brainwashing, moths, hypnosis, raping and experiments related to an important drug called Phenoxyl. At the beginning you see Jennifer as your typical rebellious teenager who serves as a maid in a hotel resort but for some reason she is attacked by Andrea, the head maid. Following your failed escape attempt you see Andrea act completely normal - and this is where you start suspecting there is some sort of hypnosis going on in the background. Things will only get messy later.

The game has a lot of cutscenes which gives it a cinematic appeal though I find Remothered a game with a lot of unnecessary cursing. A couple of playthroughs will be required to get all achievements - maxing out all your abilities and finding all collectibles can be a pain. As a decision is given to you at the end you can say we are presented with two endings.

Stealth

While Jennifer can use melee weapons to attack her pursuers they have to be approached stealthily. Some chapters require us to fight while others do not. The concept the game uses is a hit-and-miss. Whilst I appreciate that once you are noticed you can still flee and hide in lockers, wardrobes and closets in certain cases it's better to restart from a checkpoint. A notable area is the restaurant where you have 3 enemies and even if only one is patrolling once he gets sight of you the others are warned, too. Hats-off if you can escape all three.

You can find a lot of items when opening cupboards, drawers. They are either throwables (good for generating noise and also for hurting enemies) or they are used only for diversion (you can use radios, alarm clocks and dolls for this purpose).

Crafting

I guess crafting is mandatory even if you play a non-open-world game nowadays. Your defensive melee weapons and the items used for diversion can be upgraded once. If you apply flour you can get a blinding effect or get an ammonia bottle for stunning etc. Your inventory is limited and the upgrades are never game changer. At the beginning there is some tutorial on the controls but crafting is not really explained so the system requires some getting used to.

Moths

See crafting. Unnecessary. Using moths (this is the so-called Moth Eye ability Jennifer has) can highlight important area and can stun enemies for a short time. Story-wise using Moth Eye is interesting when it is required for puzzle solving. Moth keys are scattered across the mansion and finding them allows you to improve Jennifer's skills such as better health recovery, sprinting faster or using the aforementioned ability more efficiently. I needed to open a guide to find out how to upgrade my skills as the game never explains it. Special moth chests can be used for this purpose while mirrors with metronomes are used for saving the game.

Summary

Broken Porcelain is an interesting game with great soundtrack and voice acting but with a messy story and mediocre gameplay. I read it is an improvement following Tormented Fathers but this is exactly the reason why I do not intend to play that one. It is a good game for passing some time while you don't have anything better to play in your library of stealth-based games.

They really emphasized the 'Broken' in 'Broken Porcelain'.



Story, soundtrack, and character design is absolutely fantastic and a literal 10/10, but with how buggy it is I would say it is unplayable. Wait until they fix the game.

EDIT: The game has been fixed and is more playable, but it still isn't as good as the original and they really dropped the ball. This game had a lot of potential but the gameplay mechanics and level design simply bogs down the rest of the game so much it is hard to recommend still. All of what I said is a 10/10 but it really makes the argument that they could've made this a novel instead because the unique aspect of the medium adds nothing to it, and in fact hinders it. The stealth is awkard and janky, the world is tiny little areas that are more cinematic than fun to navigate unlike the original, and overall it was clearly a rushed project with not enough direction outside of the story, which again is great. I can't recommend this, despite me really, really wanting to.

This game so far has been just Error after Error. I'm getting stuck in walls. Items don't go off. I'm not able to attack them without being stabbed 2-3 times. The Guy with the gun is none stop shooting at me can't even throw a bottle without him blowing me away. I don't understand why this game is released yet.

Broken Porcelain takes all the elements from the first game , makes some of them better , and some of them much worst.

whats better :
1- graphics are significantly improved
2-the creepy atmosphere is still solid , added more enemies and characters and smarter puzzles.
3-gameplay is somehow better as they added alot of distraction and crafting weapons and alternate escaping routes.

whats worse :
1-story is straight messed up , its neither scary or interesting or nothing positive , its just gives the reaction of wtf was the writer thinking when he come up with this plot.
2-following the story the characters is also doing illogical things and dumb as hell , they are not poorly written but more like badly written , things with them just seems to escalate fast and without any logic.
3-from technical side they game still buggy and have some issues but its def better than when it was released , i encountered some problems that has been solved by reloading a save or restarting the game.

in summery its not a bad game but rather a 'mediocre' one , my personal advice that if you are interested in trying this franchise is to try the tormented fathers first , since broken porcelain serves as a prequel and sequel at the same time , and if you like it and interested to know how to story will unfold you can play this one.

What do Layers of Fear, Amnesia, A Song of Horror, Outlast, Remothered: Tormented Fathers, Resident Evil 7 and SOMA have in common? They are all better than Remothered: Broken Porcelain. I can only recommend the game to fans of the horror genre who are absolutely starved for a new adventure and have already played through everything else.

A confusing camera perspective, a confusing story, a monotonous storyline with the opening of countless drawers or box doors, an unnecessary crafting system, the limited save function, and all this garnished with many bugs make Remothered: Broken Porcelain a game, with which you don't necessarily have to waste your time. There are far better ones in the genre.

Obnoxious game. Bad controls, I can not do anything. This is semi-finished product. This should not be here in this version. Dont buy this.
