Avadon: The Black Fortress
Amazing
I haven't enjoyed an RPG this much since Baldur's Gate II. If you love a well written story, engaging tactical combat and a wonderful RPG experience then you should not hesistate to pick up this gem.

definetly considering it
I've really taken to playing single player RPGs. I used to play a tonne of WoW (I still get awful cravings to play) but now I try to relax and take in a good story. Playing Avadon is like having an excellent DM narrate to you.
Interesting....as good as Dragon Age Origins maybe?

Completely different games with varied approach to tactics. Avadon follows classic tactical RPGs much more closely than DAO. As far as plot goes, I much prefer Avadon, since it never really drops to the level of "oh ye mighty hero, save the world from an evil wizard". Rather, the political intrigue and power struggle are conveyed very elaborately, as in all other Spiderweb games. And you're just a cog in the machine...

i'm an old school rpger, grew up on ultima, might & magic, baldur's gate etc... and i just love this game. it starts slow but once you get about 6 or 7 hours in it just sucks you in. can't wait to beat this one and get on to avadon 2.
Yeah, I was with Spierweb SW since Blades of Avernum & Avernum (later Geneforge) ... as in old time it was one of very few games you could get a playable demo for free... I enjoyed playing their great games (in demo extend) even with my zero-student-income :) ... later I bought their games even multiple times as I grew into their fan and supporter and told to myself, it's time to pay them back for all the fun I had for free (although after I played later the games in full extend, I was surprised how difficult they could become ... not only combat-wise, but many times puzzle-wise :) I won't ever forget mirrors puzzle rooms :) ouch... )
Spider Web won me over with GeneForge. And I didnt even know about it until the steam release. I'm currently playing this, but plan on continuing on with Avadon 2. After that, I'm not sure if I'll finally sit down and beat the first Geneforge or go with Avernum EFTP.
Love the writing and atmosphere.
Also, I downloaded the soundtracks from Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate and shuffle the playlist in the background whilst running Avadon. EPIC.
Man, those game bring back some memories (BG and IWD were phenomenal). Never thought about getting their soundtracks and running them in the background while doing other stuff. Thanks for the idea!!!
dmt_dave, that is an amazing idea. I never even thought of doing that. The only question is, do you find that the music clashes with the areas that you're in sometimes?

That's what a gaming/multimedia keyboard is for; dedicated controls right at the touch of a finger to control volume, pause, play, skip...etc. You NEED a gaming keyboard. Seriously...you'll die without one. I've seen it happen. It's not pretty.
just started this game as well, seems really cool old school wise, i still remember playing Nintendo rog games Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy!

Dragon Warrior....awesome memories!
DRAGON WARRIOR WAS AN AMAZING RPG. Also, i started with Spiderweb Software waaay back when i played Exile I: Escape from the Pit. Anyone familiar with the EXILE SERIES?! IMO much better than avernum, if you dont mind the dated look.
