A question about Legacy

So I havent played in a while and now there is a whole bunch of new stuff. I wanted to do a full-legacy run so I could focus on getting some difficulties afterwards. My question is whether it counts only the legacy points when you finish the game or if you can keep earning them afterwards? If the former is true that would pretty much exclude Sandbox-mode for that full-legacy run, and I really dont want to do the story again, have played it enough times years ago.

I have just beaten storymode today and I had a screen where it detailed how many points I got and that it was less than my Max earned (only rushed Spiritmancer story and main story that playthrough). Which is why Im scared thats the only point it checks your Legacy points.

You earn legacy points if you keep playing even after main quest is finished.
