Microsoft has ended support for Windows 7, and with the latest update to the game we followed suit and have raised the game's minimum system requirements to Windows 10. If you're on an older version of Windows, of course our recommendation is to upgrade/update to the latest version. If that's not possible for you, please contact our support directly and we'll see if there's some way we can assist. https://inxile.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

I have Windows 8.1. Will it work on that? Until Microsoft officially stops support to Windows 8.1, I don't plan on getting Windows 10.

I was planning on getting the Deluxe version, but if I can't even play it, why spend my hard earned money?

How can you just raise the minimum requirements AFTER someone has bought the game? How does one go about getting a refund for this? Not through Steam, they didn't ♥♥♥♥ me over.

I backed the game through Kickstarter not steam so I'm probably out of luck but if it's possible I'd take one. Not fair to customers who legitimately purchased the game and now can't even play it.

Hey all, as a brief update (regarding minimum requirements having been raised to Windows 10), I’ve spoken with our engineers and they’re looking into a solution that could allow Win 7/8.1 to still launch the game. I don’t have specifics to share yet as far as timeframe, or even if it’s a change they’ll be able to make, but we’re looking into it.

In the meantime, we do have a sort of workaround we’re offering through our support contact that may help some of you. Again, if you haven’t done so already, please reach out to us there: https://inxile.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Regarding Win 7/8 users: we're working on an update but as that'll take some more time to develop and test (and we'd like to get you back in-game asap) you can follow the below to revert back to the last build and play.

Of note: Mac and Linux users should NOT use this method. Anyone experiencing issues on Mac or Linux should reach out to us via our Support Site.

- In your library, right click The Bard's Tale IV: Directors Cut
- select 'Properties'
- click the BETAS tab
- input this code: Win7n8CompatTest
- click 'check code'
- in the drop down above the code field, select Win_7_8_Test -
- click close on that tab

At this point, the game will update to the previous version that should be compatible with Win 7/8. Existing saves should be unaffected.

If this doesn't work for any Win 7/8 users, please let me know.

Success, game runs fine and the saves are unaffected. Thanks

Matt, for once I have to agree with the typical whiners/stalkers/trolls that lurk here - and that doesn't happen often ;-).

The point is, the DC *WAS* advertised as also working on win7. You really can't change the requirements halfway through the game, after it's long been bought with those advertised minimum specs. In fact, I don't think it's even allowed to do so, under steam sales policy. You *could* do it if you made a "BT4: anniversary" edition, though. :-) But I would fix and improve upon a lot of other things as well, for that (see my "final thoughts on the game" post).

But as for the original and the DC; it was clearly advertised as (also) working on win7 and 8.0/.1, there is no way around that. So while it's possible you meant the suggestion as merely a potential option in getting the game to work, it can *not* be the end solution for it, since that would mean you basically go back on your own proclaimed specs unilaterally and retro-actively. No one is going to accept that.

The end of support of MS or not, has nothing to do with that. It should still work on win7, as advertised. Furthermore, the win8.1 support did NOT stop, and it doesn't work on that OS neither, so the reason given here is pretty spurious. Even if one would accept it - which makes no sense, as said - it still wouldn't explain why you don't fix the 8.1 one, then.

Now... I read a bit further you guys apparently *are* looking into a fix for win7 and 8, which is a good thing, but in that case, your former communication was not the best of posts to make, to be honest. The naysayers all came creeping out of the woodwork on this, with vulture-like appetite, as one could have guessed. So it wasn't the smartest thing to say, if one is going to fix it afterwards anyway.

So, anyway, let me summarize, and please correct me if I'm wrong:

1)There are two major problems currently where one gets an error where the game just doesn't start (aka, "black screen" or immediate crash)?

2)One problem is the fault of AMD (at least seemingly, after I researched it on the Net) and has to do with their latest driver(s). The temporary solution is to either revert back to the 19.12.1 driver, OR, as I see now in the recent posts, *UPDATE* to the latest optional Radeon 20.1.3 version of Adrenalin?

3)The other problem having to do with the latest (potentially more debug-info-friendly) patch, which borks on win7/8 due to some files missing on those OS'es. The temporary workaround for that is what you explained here ( steamcommunity.com/app/1091980/discussions/0/1661194916742120841/?ctp=8#c1741139415983918681 ) and you're also looking into a more permanent fix so win7/8 users can still play the game?

Is that correct?

Your first callout (I believe) refers to the Mac Cloud Sync Crashes, as well as the the Win 7/8 functionality issue. We're looking into both as well as testing the AMD issue for the next patch.

Mac clients can continue to play so long as they are offline (and not cloud syncing). Older Windows OS systems can use the aforementioned Beta build in the meantime until the forthcoming patch is released which should allow those systems to play again without the need for the build reversion.

Ok, thanks for the clear and succint answer! Much appreciated!

Nicely summarised, svpd! As a (Linux based) SW developer myself I have say I'm a little bit surprised that at least the issues related to different Windows versions were not caught by standard CI/CD automated (or actually any basic) test cases before release of the upgrade patch.

It's also very surprising that Steam allows changing the minimum requirements like this, breaking the game for paid customers who may have invested much of their time into it. That needs looking into it, right?
