I advise you to look through some gameplay on youtube and make up your mind then. Personally I like te game and that's why I bought it.
The story is basically the Twilight Zone meets Stephen King. It's full of pop culture references, and is heavily inspired by Twin Peaks. Be warned, though: the ending, while satisfying, is somewhat of a cliff-hanger. The two special-episode dlc's included with the pc purchase do clear up some things, but they're hardly a sequel. Remedy has said that there won't be an Alan Wake 2 anytime soon, but that they do plan on returning to the series at some point. I highly suggest playing this, it's one of my favorite games of all time. Not to mention it'll take you a week to beat it, and that's without going for the collectibles. :\ :Tie:

The story is good, the rest of the game is pretty mediocre.

The whole game is great. Worth every penny.

One of the best stories I've ever seen!

I just beat the game and it's pretty good, problem is really the ending, i'm still gonna try to purchase the DLC though. That's pretty much it, if you want a good story, grab it.

I'm only about an hour in, and I'm really liking it. At the moment it's a bit like a film where Dreams and Reality coexist, and you never really know when a section starts, whether it's real or not. Great game so far :D

The story is awesome, but you must be able to appreciate it. It is not your standard story that will take you from A to B that anyone can understand. It's the type of story you will more often see in Japanese games, the kind of story that requires your imput and thought. The game also, as part of Alan Wake's writing, uses many metaphorical elements. It's the little details and the plot elements that are hidden beneath the surface ( of the lake ;) ) that make the story so interesting, if you do not mind that kind of story you will without a doubt appreciate it.

The story is great. It's part horror / part psychological thriller. It's an intelligent story, so you'll really have to pay attention if you want to grasp it completely.

It's like Twin Peaks mixed with Kings book Duma Key. You could say it's a rippoff of TP and Duma Key but hey it works (for me at least).
The only gripe I have with the story are the 2 dlc episodes. The last sentence you hear in the original game is perfect and thay should have left it at that. The 2 dlc and american nightmare just show to much and destroy the mystery of the original game.

This game was awesome, story was amazing. People ♥♥♥♥♥ about the gameplay but it's the story that makes the game, though the gameplay was rather fun in my opinion. Definitely The Twilight Zone meets Stephen King.

My opinion exactly.

The gameplay is meh 90% due to the notoriously bad camera - The direction of Alan's movement is never relevant to the direction of the player's sight, the view and the motion are in a constant conflict axis-wise. One gets used to it in 20 minutes or so, but still it is an outrageous inconvenience they should have fixed ages ago.

The story is decent. A bit too much popular culture references in there, but still quite solid. Intriguing, exciting, reasonably emotional. Nothing to write home about but way better than what most games do.

What really stands out though is the setting. While I guess it is quite obvious for an American player (definitely obvious for a Canadian player) - it totally blows the mind of a British player. I was overwhelmed by the environment, it is nothing but spectacular.
