How to change sandbox settings on single player savegame?
Is there a way to tweak the sandbox settings on a single player save file? Because sometimes you get a random start that is just so good but then you realise the zombie spawns are too low or something. Is there a way to do that without starting all over?

I don't believe so.

You can't change the settings in game, you will need to modify the files.

Easiest way to do this would be to create a new game with the settings you want then copy the map_sand.bin into the old saved game.

On Linux/Mac in a terminal
cp ~/Zomboid/Saves/Sandbox/<NewGame>/map_sand.bin ~/Zomboid/Saves/Sandbox/<OldGame>/
Windows Command Prompt should be something like
copy %USERPROFILE%\Zomboid\Saves\Sandbox\<NewGame>\map_sand.bin %USERPROFILE%\Zomboid\Saves\Sandbox\<OldGame>\

phils seems like the easiest way, if it doesnt work then you might try starting a new game with the settings you want and then copying and overwriting the map p.bin file and all the normal map files into the new game

Easiest and most reliable way. Fyi works for 41 too, just tested it since my dumb ass forgot to turn on multihit.

You can also edit the map_sand.bin file using a hex editor if you only want to change something that isn't a check box(true/false values).

I'm just getting back into playing after not for a few months and completely forgot to fix the respawn settings so my actions don't feel pointless. I've gotten a pretty decent start, weapons, food, gear and would love to just change settings.

So if I'd like to keep my original character, and the world I am currently in (safehouse) unchanged. But only change the zombie respawn settings; then this is what I would do for that? Meaning that, doing this won't change my character build and alter my map?

This is the way I did it. I forgot to set respawn rate to what I wanted. Started a new game with the settings I wanted and then copy/pasted that map file over to my saved game file for overwrite. backed up save just in case something bad happens.

I appreciate the quick reply, thank you! Just finished and I'm gonna see if it screwed up my old save, whether it be character or world. I'll be sure to update with what happens! Hoping all is well and that it worked as it should haha

And how it went? did it work? I'm having almost the same issue as you but I don't want to start all over again :(

It's been quite some time since I was on that save but I'm fairly certain I was able to fix the settings but instead of keeping the world items the same, it essentially created a new world save file and pasted my location, character + traits/stats onto it. So any building or car I had looted previously, anyplace I had cleared, was back to the state it was at the beginning of the original save. If I remember correctly I think I just deleted my save, and started a new one because it felt wrong beginning on a new world (Day 1) with the current traits, inventory and skill XP from lets say week 3 survived.

You can also just edit the 'map_sand.bin' file

It can be opened with a text editor like Notepad
Then, i isnt that hard to figure what is what and to change some values

I definitely went in to another save and edited the 'map_sand.bin' file alone and for some reason the same effect happened. Been months though, my memory might need to be jogged. Hope all is well and that your issue gets solved!

I wanted to change my sandbox settings from Population Multiplier 0.35(low) to 1(normal). I just tried this method and it works perfectly fine for Weapon multi hit (from false to true) but unfortunately, I didn't notice zombie population increase... I even try to switch this parameter to 4(insane) but there still were few zombies on streets. I currently play on Kingsmouth, zombie respawn turned off. Any ideas?
P.S. I chose 0.35 because on Kingsmouth there is one 4-story building with a bookstore where zombie quantity was insane, I couldn't get into that bookstore even after I've killed 1000 of them... but now with 0.35 other streets are empty (the bookstore is still unreachable))

With respawn off, any area you have visited at least once is locked out from creating any new zombie
No spawn, no respawn

Changing the max population afterward will only have an effect on areas you have never visited
