Can't Get Past Loading Textures
tl;dr

Certain classes of hardware (namely Intel HD 2000 and below) have been having trouble with the newest vehicle build. They're pretty rare these days and are below the minimum spec for the game (32-bit OSes are under 1% in the Steam hardware survey) but we'd still like to try and get the game running.

The following sections may help you get it to work. If it does help, please let us know in the comments!

And remember . . .

You Can Always Go Back
But, don't worry. We've kept the last known good build up on a beta tab for anyone that's affected. You can get it by activating the Build 38.30 beta:

  1. Right-click Project Zomboid in the Steam games list
  2. Go to Properties
  3. Go to the Betas tab
  4. Select Build 38.30 from the drop-down list
  5. Press OK

Steam will now download build 38.30.

Disable the Steam Overlay
  1. Right-click PZ in the Steam games list
  2. Go to Properties
  3. Uncheck the Steam in-game community or overlay
  4. press OK

Change the Game Settings
Lower is better.

Download this Options.ini file and overwrite the one in %UserProfile%\Zomboid
https://www.dropbox.com/s/na1kl8fmzn9shn8/options.ini?dl=0

It should set everything to the bare minimum. Do not edit it until after you've made sure a new game will load correctly.

Run the 32-Bit Version
Go to %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\steamapps\common\Project Zomboid\ and double-click the ProjectZomboid32.bat file to launch the game. It's possible it'll behave differently, as it uses slightly different libraries and drivers than the 64-bit version of the game.

Update Your Drivers
Particularly for Intel, drivers sourced from Windows Update or the manufacturer of your laptop tend not to be sufficient to run the game. Even if you've installed them from there in the past, it's not uncommon to have Windows Update replace them.

Go to the support website of your flavour of GPU and search for the drivers there, be it Intel, Nvidia, or AMD.

Make sure Dual-Graphics Card Systems are Set to the Right Card
Have a laptop that has two graphics cards (one low powered, such as the integrated Intel) and high powered (usually Nvidia or AMD)? Make sure you're using the right one. Typically you can do this by right-clicking on the desktop and going into the Intel control panel. There should be an option to force the high-performance GPU on.

Some laptops may require you to change a setting in the BIOS.

Still Doesn't Work?
Please do post your specs here. Mainly, we need to know the following:

  1. Is your computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
  2. What OS are you on
  3. What CPU do you have (the model number would be best)
  4. What graphics card(s) do you have?
  5. How much RAM do you have?

Ideally, include a screenshot along with a pastebin.com link to the console.txt, and we'll see if we can't figure this out, together.

But im sure others have this issue and this post will "or i hope will :-)" help them be able to rejoin and play again :-) And i tip my hat to you sir.

in need of some help, I cannot get past the load textures on either versionof the game, or the .bat version as well. I should be able to as I have

1. 64 bit
2. Windows 10
3. Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz
4. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
5.. 16 GB of RAM with 15.9 Available

Everything here is WAY above the necessary requirements, but whenever I run the game it NEVER gets past the textures

Don't know if this will help anyone or not. I was having the same issue, game wouldn't load past the textures/characters. Tried a ton of fixes, tried running it in 32 bit but it was crashy. I ended up getting it to work simply by going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid and right clicking on Project Zomboid 64 application file, run as administrator. Game works. No clue why but it's the only thing I've tried thus far that has worked.
