PSA About Hedon's Steam Release & Misinformation
TL;DR:
- Some people are making threads on 4ch*n and 8ch*n impersonating me or garnering hate towards Hedon through different means. I think it's obvious that I don't endorse any of that;
- Although it started as a Doom mod, Hedon is NOT a Doom mod in the present, as the GZDoom Engine no longer requires a doom wad file for the game to work and uses a General Public License. You will see more and more games appear on Steam with this engine, but since Hedon's among the first I have to clear the confusion ahead;
- The first episode was promised to be free and I have fulfilled my promise. It is available on itch.io and IndieDB, under a definitive and polished version 1.2.0;
- The future of Hedon is as a published game, moving on from version 1.2.0 and coming with new content and updates for Steam. End of story.

Long version:
Ok so normally I don't care about random people on the internet trolling or whatever, there has been some extreme cases of screeching going on lately, therefore I am forced to make an official statement.

First of all, Hedon started as a Doom mod and hobby, and there are traces of its development all around the internet, like the alpha and beta builds on ModDB (I'll actually leave them around for the sake of history).
At some point, however, I realized that since I'm putting a lot of effort into the development and that I am making my own assets, I should try to ease into serious game development and turn Hedon into an actual game. This led to me making a Patreon page, which caused some people from the ZDoom community to go ballistic (and apparently spew garbage about me on 8c*an) without understanding that Hedon was technically not a mod, and that all my work from IP to assets was mine, free of the legal mumbo jumbo that separates mods from games.

For two years and half I have worked an average of 5 hours a day, spending every ounce of spare time I had with Hedon's development, also investing my own money into some of the soundtrack and voice acting (which was later recovered through Patreon support).
With GZDoom eventually being licensed under GPL, I switched it to an actual, legal and fully fledged game. I promised a free release and said that if it's successful and people like it, I would take it to legit commercial publishing.

After spending well over 4500 hours of development (do the math and see how much is that worth in money), I have released the first episode for free, as promised, so people could enjoy it or hate it or whatever, but free of any charge. This version is 1.2.0 and is still available to be played, except that I have cut support for it since I am now transitioning into Hedon as a serious commercial title, with other episodes and content to come.

I have fulfilled my promise already, and now I am moving on, through Steam. If you want to play Hedon for free, go ahead and do it, if you want to get it on Steam, you also get some extra stuff along. Future episodes will be released commercially too, most likely as DLC map packs with 8-10 levels and similar play time to the first one.

Hopefully this will put an end to all sort of speculations once and for all.

Thank you for your hard work, Zan. I think we can go ahead and call the older version of Hedon the shareware version.

You're a pretty sad little guy, truly pathetic, but hey, you have fun being a complete clown and all
Just a reminder that you can simply click on their avatar to go to their profile, then click More and click Block all Communication. Then you don't have to read their rather embarrassing trolling attempts anymore. You just see a small bar that says "Blocked user" where they would have posted. I imagine you'll have to do it a few times until their list of friends/alt accounts are exhausted.

Normally I'm all for some hilarious trolling, but this attempt just makes me cringe, really.

I appreciate all the hard work put into this. It really does show! please keep up the amazing work in the future!
Now that things have calmed down, I can say what I meant to say before.

I am absolutely loving this. The enemies are fun, the weapons are pretty interesting, and the levels, while confusing sometimes, are sprawling and a blast. Spent way too long looking for the iron key in the third level though. Ran past it so many times. The axe is my favorite weapon, and I tend to use it almost too much, often forgetting I have other weapons. I imagine it must be odd for the cultists, watching Zan chuck the axe through a mob and sprinting past the baffled survivors to grab and lob it again. It gives me a strong Hexen vibe really. I haven't beaten the game yet, so I don't know if it's in the game, but an axe that returned after throwing it would make my day

Zan is fun too. She THIQ. I was hoping that legendary axesmith would give an extra-thicc axe to go with Zan's thiq self, but alas.
Came for the thicc orc ladies.
Stayed for the quality gameplay.
Thanks, man. Keep up the good work.
