Upgrading from Vive HMD to Index HMD (how seemless is it?)
Had my OG Vive since they first hit the market with the lens mod and play mostly racing sims with it (iRacing, Assetto Corsa, etc.). Was considering upgrading my Vive HMD with the Index HMD and keep using my existing base stations from the Vive. Got my email the other day telling me an Index HMD is ready for me to purchase if I want it.

Has anyone else done this upgrade and how does this work with my existing Vive games (racing sims)? Is it that basically any SteamVR game that worked on my Vive will work on an Index? Or not necessarily true?

Literally plugged mine in, upgraded the software in the headset and controllers, and it was done. Pretty dang seamless. Especially if you're using the same controllers there should be no issues.

That's what I want to hear. Now just have to talk myself into it. Wondering also if I am going to need a hardware upgrade as well. Running a OC GTX 1070 and i5 7600k.

It's always hard deciding whether to invest into my sim racing setup or spend that money on my real track car.

I dropped down from a 2080ti to a 2070gtx 8gb with SS at 150%. It is very playable. 150% SS is default and the magic number to where anything higher is just not worth it and barely noticable unless y ou spend minutes doing side by side comparisons. I was testing my friends graphics card.

few games will give you issues like...
elite dangerous
project cars 2
I have those maxed on a 2080ti.

Still debating. Little apprehensive because of the glare issues I am hearing about and the fresnel lenses. I hated the fresnels on my Vive and making the GearVR lens swap saved my Vive from a life of collecting dust to something I use nearly every day.

My reserve expired tomorrow so I said **** it and ordered the thing. Had a hard time deciding between my racing sim upgrade or actual real track car upgrades. I certainly get way more track time in VR than real life so opted for the Index. However now I am pretty sure I need to do a video card upgrade now as well as my Asus Strix GTX 1070 OC already struggles to hold 90fps in most racing sims I am running, but then again I am pushing between 1.5-1.6 SS on those titles. I think I am going GTX 2070 Super. Probably need a CPU upgrade soon as well. Running an i5 7600k.

My Vive gave me 2-3 years of enjoyment and still works great. Will likely try and sell the HMD for $100-$150 since it already has the GearVR lens mod that I am sure someone out there might want.

One word answer to your question, how seamless is it? = VERY.

Well the RTX 2070 Super is a hard card to come by it seems. B&H was out of stock or awaiting release on a couple of them, and the Asus ROG 2070 Super Strix OC was listed as 3-7 business days out so ordered one. Now today they changed the 3-7 days out to backordered with no estimated arrival time, only that more are on the way. The other flavors of the 2070 Super they had that were showing arrival date of August 16th have now been pushed out to the 26th.

Index arrives Friday. Was hoping to get the new card around the same time but maybe not. Debating just getting a 2080 instead, but can't justify the price difference for my impatience.
