Can this game be compared to a monster hunter?

Not exactly but if you check out some urgent quest boss fight videos, it might kind of give away MonHun vibe though.

The combat isn't similar. They are very different beasts.

I like both, but I wouldn't group the combat together. Other than very, very broadly. Which kinda defeats the purpose.

Only in classic pso2, but have fun finding people to play.

Not sure what you mean by "best advantage". People play it because they enjoy it same as any other game and how people view those.

Only you can gauge if it's worth playing.

This game is a PvE ARPG/MMO kinda hybrid. Quite a bit of it can be played solo if that's your mojo, but you'll have a much easier time with some world bosses with a group, and a group is a must for the Urgent Quests.

It's worth playing if you like to race around, explore, and beat the pulp out of anything that moves that is not another player. if PvP specifically is your mojo, there are other games that offer that as an option.

To answer your questions:

  • There is PvP in the form of the "Battle Arena" but none of your equipment transfers there as you play as a "Challenger" in the original game with the goal to collect medals and to hunt players on the opposing team who have the most medals. That is the extent of PvP there is nowadays. Maybe you'll still find people here who will play it - but this is one of the parts of the game most players dread. If you can find a group to casually play it with and aren't concerned about winning and losing, it can be relatively fun but very clunky compared to what Phantasy Star Online 2 developed to be later on (and is a very far cry from what New Genesis currently is).

  • The only real comparison I would have compared Phantasy Star Online 2 to is to older Monster Hunter games and games like God Eater where you are in a lobby with players, organize your team, and head out for quests. Phantasy Star Online 2 was one of these kinds of games that jumped in when those games were very big (Monster Hunter Portable, God Eater, Toukiden, Ragnarok Odyssey, Freedom Wars, and more being related games). As for actual gameplay the game is distinctly different in that it plays like a very "loose" Dragon's Dogma if we were to keep comparing this to other games. Certain classes, however, draw more inspiration from other games (Hero focusing on speed and reacting to enemies with weapon-switching and attack-cycling to build power in a loose way to how Devil May Cry plays out to build Style Points, and the Etoile having a number of magical/floaty attacks and a floaty nature that can look something like a Square Enix game or a Kingdom Hearts II Drive Form depending on the weapon you use).

  • In regards to the gameplay in New Genesis, I would definitely say it is more "Monster Hunter World-like" in that your combat locks you into your animations so you no longer get to freely dodge and block at the last second unless you are using a specific weapon (Twin Daggers seem to still let you do this in my experience). The gameplay here, in my personal summary, is that Sega took all the original classes in Phantasy Star Online 2, sprinkled some Successor Class magic on them (meaning a lot of reworks, cleanups, and some quality-of-life changes were made), and then baked that in as "Level 1" gameplay so you simply don't have to drag yourself through a game with clunky combat for about 75 or 85 levels before things start solidifying like in the original game. If you like the idea of having a solid action game to play with and are interested in running around an open world (alone or with friends, or even with random players) to kill and gather things I feel that you might like New Genesis in that case.

  • The main advantage I would put Phantasy Star Online 2 (and New Genesis) on a pedestal for is the character creation/customization. While I cannot explain much of the Japanese side due to it not being relevant to global players (you will not get Sonic, Kirito, Godzilla, and Gridman teaming up to fight Odin from Final Fantasy XIV using Monster Hunter weapons made from Elzelion, for example), there is still quite a bit of variety in accessories and clothing options that let you make the character(s) you want and still have a game to play that uses them. I cannot think of any other game that lets you go in with that sort of depth and variety without severely limiting you in some way (Soul Calibur comes to mind as one of the closest examples I can think of which falls apart due to its limited selection of items and parts).

NGS is closer to MH than old PSO2 imo.
