In the endgame I prefer a melee setup since the North Pole is so, *so* much stronger than the Blizzard Staff.
when useing magic weapons
u mana ends :/
Usually caster-types have the best offense and very little in the ways of survivability, but in Terraria's current endgame it's the exact opposite; they have very low attack power compared to Warrior-types, but they have built-in healing that gives them impressive survivability.
I'd have been of the opinion that the North Pole is way overpowered, but when I do Frost Moon with a melee setup I have to rely on buffs and health pick-ups from slain opponents for healing. If I didn't kill them as quickly as the Pole lets me, I wouldn't be able to keep myself alive for very long.
Use the Magic Cuffs accessory for virtually unlimited Mana.
Keep in mind, while Mana potions are cheap, even the richest player doesn't get any extra inventory space. Keeping a few stacks of potions not only costs space but it also requires you to "refill" every so often, which is an additional hassle.
For the Cuffs are just so much more convenient, it's no contest.
true but we have different opinions :)
Like... Mana Flowers do have one advantage over the Cuffs; you never need to take damage to recover Mana. For someone who doesn't have Spectre Armor, losing inventory space and having to refill their potion stacks might seem preferable to purposefully getting hit once in a while.
They have to go all "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY", then you know you're doing it right!
But fosrs, It all comes down to what you prefer to do, not what is better than the other. Long range users would prefer bows, guns and spells, while warriors and tanks could use spears, boomerangs and swords.
Melee is a risky choice due to your range of effectiveness being extremly shorter than most, meaning that you have to close the gap on foes to actually do damage. But you are rewarded for your risky maneouvers due to swords and the like being very damaging (especially the Terra blade's whopping 80 damage per swing).
Ranged users are heavily dependant on how much amunition they are currently carrying, and most ranged weapons deal half the damage of normal melee weapons. But ranged users also get to stay further away from enemies, allowing for more survivability plus most ranged weapons have very high DPS profiles (Uzi, Megashark, Chain gun).
Magic users get lower overall defense and they have to wait for theyre mana to regen, meaning that sometimes they will not be attacking at all (unless they have proper gear, of course). But what they get out of this is a massive variety of extremly useful spells that can deal massive amount of damage AND player controlled projectiles (Golden shower, Rainbow rod, Cursed Flames)
In the end it all comes down to what you want to do to have fun your way, not what you need to do in order to beat that one annoying boss. Sure, some bosses become ''Copper sword vs Destroyer'' level difficult if you decide to try and beat them with melee attacks, but you can still make it work. I even beat Destroyer without using any ranged weapons at all; just a Cutlass.
I love my guns and other ranged weapons (Stynger) but I also love my blades (Terra Blade and Vampire Knives). Current armor is Shroomite due to the massive nerf to heal on hit items (seriously? 2 Hearts? 3-4 seems a bit better). Higher damage for Melee just makes you hit that cap faster.
Still, that's one of the reasons I'm glad I switched to melee. I get to do far more damage than with a magic setup and there's no resource cost involved! And that means one more free accessory slot as well.
