whats the best pre hardmode weapons and armour for a mage i can get

Jungle armor - more universal, Meteor armor - a lot of damage. There are a lot of pre hardmode spells, most of them are in dungeon. You can craft gem staffs, topaz staff for example, using metal bars and gems. Underworld is place where you can find most powerful, prehardmode spells (flower of fire, flamelash etc.)

Get Meteor armor and a Space Gun. When you fight Wall of Flesh, however, get a Water Bolt from the dungeon. It makes the fight extremely easy. You can find Water Bolt on the book shelves. It's hidden but you'll find it eventually.

Not directly, but indirectly, as those classes tend to be better at avoiding damage.
Thus their HP regen doesnt have to build up as often, a fact which synergies with the accerlated regen of that set.

Shadow on the other hand directly aids meele with increased meele speed while the other classes only get to enjoy the movement boost.

So, yes you could say thats true.

Oh, yes. Shadow Armor's bonus only applies an increased movement speed bonus and the 3 pieces confer a 21% Melee Speed increase, while the Crimson Armor gives +2% Damage for all weapons per piece of armor and an enormous boost to HP regen. It still looks stupid, though.

Best armor for Pre-Hardmode mages in my opinion is the Meteor Armor, but I look more towards raw DPS than sustainable DPS.

Meteor armor + a space gun is a good option. Jungle armor is also magic related, but is rather for mid-game.

use the bee gun for everything before hardmode then use the space gun in hardmode

If you honestly think he should use the Space Gun for Hardmode mobs, why shouldn't he use it for Prehardmode?
