I just don't "get" this game
I'm having a heck of a time figuring this game out. I've had it in my library for years, and whenever I've been tempted to play it, I get thrown off the learning curve like it was a bucking bronco.

I heard about the Journey's End update and figured this would be the time to try it again, and it's the same. I have no idea what to do, let alone how to do anything. The "guide" doesn't provide much help. I finally went to a wiki and read up on a tutorial section for starting the game, and even that was a struggle. The instructions seemed clear, but I spent an hour trying to figure out crafting and how to actually construct a house. I got killed by zombies(???) a couple of times, before I finally got some walls up. Then it was about 30 minutes of struggling with the UI while trying to figure out why I couldn't place a door. Then I got the door in place, and the Guide moved in.

Now it's night and we're just sitting here in the house while zombies kick at the door. Huh? Is this correct? Where's the fun in this? Where's the actual game?

I'm not hating on the game, this is clearly a problem on my part, but I'm just baffled as to it's popularity and point. Can anyone send a clue my way? What am I missing here?

Edit: Thanks to all the people who replied with nice answers and usable tips, rather than snarky abuse. I'm heading back in to give it another try!

Edit 2: Again, thanks to all who replied with serious tips and helped me over the initial hump. I'll keep at it and see how it goes. At least I feel I can give it a good try this time!

I take it it was a gift from someone else?
I bought it in January 2012, had trouble figuring it out, and then it sat in my library for 8 years.
I am 90% this guy is trolling, after reading through all the comments. It seems like they're ignoring everything people are saying, because people have been extremely concise with their attempts at helping them. If I am wrong and you somehow truly do not understand despite this, then please let me apologies a head of time now, but this just completely feel like a trap at this point.

What are you talking about? Are you missing all my replies where I said "thanks for the tips", and mentioned playing more and trying to work it out? The progress I made? I'm absolutely baffled as to your attitude.
I honestly think he's being genuine . . . haven't once doubted that he isn't. People ask stuff like this all the time about Stardew Valley, another game that I'm extremely fond of. Some people are just confused when they first start exploring a game in a different genre then they're used to. And really, Terraria gives no hand-outs when it comes to figuring out the point of the game to someone who's not familiar with the genre. Really getting into the game is work, and finding out how fantastic it is is the reward.

Yes, they are. The people saying this is a troll thread are likely neckbeards who can't possibly fathom the concept of someone not knowing basic video game language. They probably figure if you own the game, and are knowledgeable enough to navigate the forums, you must know how to play the game, because that's how they operate. They're petty children who don't understand empathy and think you're entitled for asking for help when "you should know this already".

I can't really give many other starter tips that people haven't already told you, so I'll give you a few more specific tips about how to go about progressing (again, while there is a progression system of bosses > gear > harder bosses, it's not mandatory if you don't like it).

1. Collect as many falling stars and heart crystals as you can. Falling stars spawn pretty commonly all around the map at night. Just walk around left and right and get as many as you can (don't go too far left or right if you're not equipped - the corruption biomes and jungle WILL kill you). You can turn the stars into mana crystals, maximum mana is 200. You can get there relatively quickly if you know what you're doing.
Heart crystals are almost anywhere underground. They... well, they look like hearts. You'll know them when you see them. I recommend getting at least 240~300 health before your first boss. The max is 400. Each crystal gives +20 max health.

2. Get a magic weapon, a bow, and frostburn arrows. The Wand of Sparking can be found in giant hollowed-out trees. There should be a guaranteed hollow tree to both your left and your right at some point. Find one, go down inside, look for a chest. Good chance of one being in there. The base damage is solid for early on, and it also lights enemies on fire sometimes.
To get frostburn arrows, craft a bunch of arrows (wood + stone, at a crafting bench), then go left or right until you find the ice biome. Gather a bunch of ice (not snow), and then use ice and torches to make frost torches. Frost torch + regular arrow = Frostburn arrows. They're incredibly powerful early game and will probably be your best bet at taking down early bosses.

If Wand of Sparking isn't good enough, there's a *slim* chance you can get what's called a Waterbolt spellbook early on. Go left or right enough until you find a giant stone temple-looking thing. This is the dungeon. You can go inside, but DO NOT go down into the lower catacombs. "Dungeon Guardians" will spawn and kill you. Instantly. They're practically invincible and deal 99999 damage. To go in deeper, you'd normally have to kill Skeleton first, making the Guardians not spawn.
ANYWAYS - You'll see books on shelves in the dungeon, you can take them if you'd like. They can be used to craft decorative bookshelves. However, if you see a book on a shelf that is *blue* with a *white-ish/yellow* stripe on it, that's the Waterbolt spellbook. There's tons of them inside the dungeon, and normally you'd have to kill Skeleton to get one, but if you're lucky, one can spawn in the area before the catacombs. (Also, you can go into the catacombs a little ways before the Guardians spawn. About 100~ blocks down, I'd say. If you don't see a Waterbolt on the surface you can go a *little* ways in to try and find one). If you manage to get one, it's a very powerful early-game weapon. Will kill most mobs and is great for bosses.

3. Build "Boss arenas" to fight bosses. There's plenty of youtube guides on how to do this, but the general gist is that you choose where you're going to fight a boss, clear out a huge empty area, and then make layers of wood platforms (you can craft 2 platforms from 1 wood, no bench required). Make the layers of platforms REALLY long, and about 5~ blocks apart from each other vertically. This will let you have a large space to dodge boss attacks, and offer a lot of vertical mobility, which you normally don't have at the start.
Also, build some campfires (10 wood + 5 torches, no bench needed) and place them around the platforms. Under your inventory you'll see your buffs/debuffs. Campfires give you a "Cozy fire" buff that boosts your health regeneration. It's not much, but it helps a lot over the course of a boss fight. You can also craft Heart Lanterns, which will add another regeneration buff that stacks with the campfire. You'll need to already have an Iron or Lead anvil and some extra Iron/Lead bars. Craft 10 chains at an anvil, and get another Heart Crystal. Combine the 10 chains and Heart Crystal (no anvil/bench needed) to make a Heart Lantern. One or two is usually enough to cover an entire arena.

If you're really having trouble surviving boss fights, build an NPC house somewhere in or near your boss arena. You'll also need the Nurse NPC to show up. Once you have a house and a Nurse, on the right of your screen near your equipment, there's a house symbol. Click that, select the Nurse, and click the house near your arena. Eventually she'll move into that house, and you can pay her to fully heal you even during a bossfight (you'll have to be quick tho, as all enemies can hurt and possibly kill NPC's). Once healing yourself is a non-issue, it's just a matter of doing enough damage, as most bosses only spawn at night time and will de-spawn when it becomes day.

4. You can also whack trees with your axe to make them drop items. Usually you get wood or acorns, but sometimes they'll drop food items that provide temporary buffs to all stats. To get a lot of these, DON'T tear the trees down completely. Just whack them once with your axe. They usually "restock" on items every few minutes, and you'll have another chance at a food item. Also make sure to stock up on Health potions.

By default, you can press 'H' to automatically use a potion without having to select it, and 'B' to automatically use items that give you buffs (like food). Remember that during a boss fight so you don't have to panic and scavenge through your inventory for potions/food.

Terraria is the type of game you just play even if you don't know anything just play and explore and eventually it will click.
You seriously did manage to kick a hornets nest there, but luckily you did find people willing to help. On the one hand I do understand why some people think you are trolling, seeing that I'm pretty much a gamer since the early nineties an thus take a lot of things for granted, that beginners may not (one can get blind to these things without realizing). Though I do see you are being genuine (I have my old man playing Minecraft and my younger sister who started to play this game as of now). So instead of calling you rude names I'll give you something useful that I figured out the hard way one my first try (oh and yeah don't forget to take a look at the guide from the one friendly person in the chat)... You know those zombies banging on your door at night right? There are certain events (like for example the so called 'Blood Moon' or the 'Solar Eclypse' were enemies get the abbillity to smash open doors. You can counter this by blocking the door on the other side by placing a torch or a chair (or anything piece of furniture really) right behind it, whilst closed (so that said object blocks the hitbox of the door when openened in said direction). This unfortunately means you have to open the door facing in the opposite direction (so opening it outwards from the blocked side)... but it prevents sudden surprises with zombies opening doors all of a sudden. Though be warned. If they can't open the doors they will smash them instead... they can do that to on said events. Sorry for the wall of text but I hope this little info might be semi useful to you.

It's better you go watch YouTube guides instead of just reading

If you need help from YouTube this isn't the game for you.
Hope that all the tips you got are enough for you to progress. Good luck and don't get turned off by slow beginning. Once you defeat couple of bosses and get some good gear, game will really speed up.

Well, it's pretty clear I disagree with this. If you don't have a frame of reference, then you're just confused about what to do.

well i played it since 2011 and that's how i did it. I did use wikia time to time before they made the Guide useful instead of useless like he used to be. Besides i said play this way and see if it clicks i didn't say it's the way to master the game or understand everything.

I've been playing computer games since the 70's, so I'm not what you'd call a "beginner". I'm just used to games being more "structured".
